Al Vega

Al Vega (actually: Aram Vagramian , born June 22, 1921 in Worcester (Massachusetts) , † December 2, 2011 in Boston ) was an American jazz pianist and vibraphonist .

Life

Vega, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1921, studied at Northeastern University and the New England Conservatory of Music . During his seventy year career, he was active in the Boston jazz scene. From 1938 he worked as a resident pianist at the Hi-Hat jazz club and later played with jazz greats such as Charlie Parker , Dizzy Gillespie , Miles Davis , Count Basie , Lester Young and Duke Ellington , who were guest in Boston . In 1950 the first recordings were made with Serge Chaloff ( Uptown ); In 1953 he presented the trio album Piano Solos with Bongos on Prestige Records . Vega was also active as a music teacher. Most recently he presented the album 80 over 88 .

To celebrate his 90th birthday, a jazz party was held at Sculler's Jazzclub. a. Grace Kelly performed. He died in Massachusetts General Hospital in December 2011.
