Joe Gordon

Joseph Henry "Joe" Gordon (* 15. May 1928 in Boston , † 4. November 1963 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz - trumpet . He became known through his play in the bands of Dizzy Gillespie and Shelly Manne .

Live and act

Gordon played from 1947 in Boston in his own formations and in local orchestras, also with Georgie Auld and Charlie Mariano . In spring 1958 he went on tour with the orchestra of Dizzy Gillespie , had his own band in Boston again in the summer and was hired by Herb Pomeroy for his band. He was also a brief member of the Jazz Messengers . Then he settled on the west coast and worked from November 1958 with Shelly Manne and various other formations of West Coast jazz . In September 1959, Shelly Manne & his Men recorded the legendary recordings at the Black Hawk jazz club in San Francisco, and in the spring of 1960 Gordon visited Europe as a member of Mann's quintet. His playing, which is heavily influenced by Dizzy Gillespie, can also be heard on recordings with Art Blakey , Barney Kessel , Helen Humes and Thelonious Monk ( At the Blackhawk , 1960). In 1954 he also recorded an album under his own name.

He did not succeed in a successful solo career. He was killed in a room fire when he was only 35 years old.
