In September 1959, Shelly Manne & his Men recorded the legendary recordings at the Black Hawk jazz club in San Francisco, and in the spring of 1960 Gordon visited Europe as a member of Mann's quintet. His playing, which is heavily influenced by Dizzy Gillespie, can also be heard on recordings with Art Blakey , Barney Kessel , Helen Humes and Thelonious Monk ( At the Blackhawk , 1960).
