The carriage house is a farm building with shelter , which is usually on the rear property line of vehicles or equipment was built. The word comes from French and is derived from the verb remettre , 'put down, provide' . The Latin root is the verb remittere 'send back, discard' .

designation

The term Remise is used today, especially in Austria and Switzerland, in the sense of depot for maintenance and repair purposes of vehicles, but also partly in Germany. The expressions tram dumps or fire brigade dumps were often used for the fire stations. Colloquially, this has been preserved in many cases to this day.

In Austria, the term is still used today for a tram depot, such as the Kreuzgasse remise in Vienna or Remise I and III, the Graz tram . The previous Vienna Tram Museum was reopened in September 2014 under the name Remise - Verkehrsmuseum der Wiener Linien (it is located in a former remise). In Berlin , the term is used for one to two-storey courtyard buildings , which are now often used by smaller businesses within apartment blocks . In current parlance, sheds , workshops , garages and other outbuildings at the rear property line come close to meaning.

history

The carriage houses as custodian came in the 19th century as a separate building type and were as one-sided accessible outbuildings at the rear of a large inner-city apartment building plots built to horses , carriages and locomotives for the parking protected from the weather and cars. They originally served the fleet as a shelter . Sometimes there were apartments for staff such as coachmen or stable lads in the coach house buildings or associated extensions .

Since high-emission commercial operations on properties with predominantly residential use are no longer eligible for approval, the depot buildings often had to be converted after their repair or renovation and now take on other functions, such as a restaurant , residential building or cultural center . Remises, where there were no conflicts of use due to the size of the property and the given commercial use , still serve their original purpose today. An example of this is the Gmunden tram depot building , built in 1893 , in which the vehicle fleet is still maintained and stored today. In Berlin and Düsseldorf, there are now old-timer centers called Classic Remise in former road and rail depots .
