Classic Remise is the name of a business model (service centers for everything to do with motorcycles and automobiles , specializing in the area of classic, vintage and collector's vehicles). There are two Classic Remisen in Berlin and Düsseldorf . Both service centers are located in listed buildings with an industrial and traffic engineering background.

history

As a result of scientific research at the European Business School on the question of building concepts for certain target groups, the first project ideas arose in 2000. A suitable building was found in Berlin as well as investors who were ready to implement the project. The opening in Berlin took place in May 2003.

Another project was then carried out in Düsseldorf in an old roundhouse, where the concept was further developed with the experience of Berlin. The opening in the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia took place in September 2006. The centers were originally opened under the license name Meilenwerk .

Since spring 2011, the centers in Berlin and Düsseldorf have been operating as Classic Remise .

Other important vintage car centers with similar concepts were later opened in Nuremberg (Ofenwerk), in Frankfurt (Klassikstadt) and in Böblingen (Motorworld Region Stuttgart). There are also smaller centers in Bremen, Bielefeld and Ulm.

The Classic Remisen are a mixture of a living museum , parking garage and service center. In addition to the specialized dealers with their showrooms, workshops and other specialists in the field of classic vehicles, glass garages can also be rented. The vehicles are stored and guarded in the glass boxes. They can be viewed there by visitors at any time and the owners always have access to their vehicle.

The concept was deliberately implemented in listed buildings. In Berlin, for example, bomb holes reminiscent of the attacks during the Second World War can be found on the ceiling of the building. At the entrance to the former tram depot, too, an old sign with the words Warning, Danger, Gate Pillar reminds of the earlier use. In Düsseldorf you can see the old chimneys above the locomotive spaces in the round of the roundhouse, as well as the weathered enamel signs with the numbers of the parking spaces and large light strips with only partially replaced window glass.

building

The building, the so-called Wiebehallen, was built from 1899 to 1901 and was used as a tram depot under the name Moabit depot. This depot used to be the largest tram depot in Europe with more than 10,000 m². After the depot was closed in 1964 and tram operations in West Berlin were completely stopped in 1967, the halls fell into disrepair since the late 1960s. Later the halls were even closed due to the risk of collapse. Between 2002 and 2003 the rectangular building was completely restored. Historical writings, damage from the Second World War or parts of tram tracks are a reminder of the building's past. The completed building has won several awards, including the Berlin Monument Preservation Prize, the Ferdinand von Quast Medal , in 2004 .
