Mileage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Until the beginning of 2014, Meilenwerk was a name for service centers for everything to do with motorcycles and automobiles , specializing in classic, vintage and collector vehicles. Meilenwerk was also the name of the company Meilenwerk AG, which developed and marketed the concept for such centers and projects after acquiring the trademark rights from 2010 until the bankruptcy in 2016. Previously, other companies had already marketed the concept and the trademark rights as temporary owners of the trademark rights. The first “Meilenwerk” was opened in Berlin in 2003, followed by Düsseldorf in 2006 and Stuttgart in 2009, all of which were later run by their respective owners under different names (see below). New locations in Zurich , Hamburg and (again) in Berlin were planned, but were not implemented. All service centers were located in listed buildings with an industrial and traffic engineering background.

history

As a result of scientific research at the European Business School on the question of building concepts for certain target groups, the first project ideas arose in 2000. The lecturer Martin Halder and his team developed the ideas for the concept. The implementation of the concept took place in the following years one after the other by different companies.

Martin Halder initially found a suitable building in Berlin as well as investors who were ready to take on the project. The opening in Berlin, under the name of Meilenwerk at the time, took place in May 2003. Afterwards, another project was implemented in Düsseldorf, where the concept was further developed with the experience of Berlin. The opening in the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia took place in September 2006. In 2009 the Meilenwerk Region Stuttgart was opened. This was created in a listed building complex of the airfield in Böblingen.

In spring 2011, the centers in Berlin and Düsseldorf were renamed Classic Remise by the owners . After the renaming, there were legal disputes between the owners and Meilenwerk AG. For reasons similar to those in Berlin and Düsseldorf, the owners of the Meilenwerk Region Stuttgart renamed their house to Motorworld Region Stuttgart on January 4th, 2014 .

concept

Preserved track segment in Düsseldorf

The Meilenwerke were a mixture of “living museums ”, a parking garage and a service center. In addition to the specialized dealers with their showrooms, the workshops and other specialists in the field of classic vehicles, glass garages could be rented. The vehicles were kept air-conditioned and guarded in the glass boxes. Visitors could look at them there at any time and the owners always had access to their vehicle.

The concept was consciously implemented in listed buildings. In Berlin, for example, bomb holes that were poorly repaired were found on the ceiling of the building, reminding of the attacks during the Second World War. At the entrance to the former tram depot, too, an old sign with the words “Warning, Danger, Gate Pillar” reminded of its earlier use. In Düsseldorf the old chimneys could be seen above the locomotive spaces in the round of the roundhouse, as well as the weathered enamel signs with the numbers of the parking spaces and large light strips with only partially replaced window glass.

Bankruptcies

After the end of the collaboration between the owner of the “Meilenwerk” brand with the previous locations in Berlin, Düsseldorf and the Stuttgart (Böblingen) region, Meilenwerk AG was unable to develop and open another location. Most recently, a major project on the Havel island Eiswerder failed . The Charlottenburg District Court opened insolvency proceedings on the assets of Meilenwerk AG on January 29, 2016 (AG Charlottenburg, Az .: 36m IN 75/16) due to insolvency and over-indebtedness.

The insolvency administrator of Meilenwerk AG has transferred the Meilenwerk brands to the collecting company Pace & Property GmbH. The brands are currently not in use.

places

Meilenwerk Berlin and Düsseldorf

The Meilenwerk Berlin was opened in 2003 in the so-called Wiebehallen. The building was built from 1899 to 1901 and was used as a tram depot under the name Moabit depot. The converted building has received several awards, including the Berlin Monument Preservation Prize of the Ferdinand von Quast Medal in 2004 .

The Meilenwerk Düsseldorf was designed in 2006 in a former roundhouse. The listed building was built between 1929 and 1931. The diameter of the locomotive shed is almost 150 m, making it one of the largest preserved locomotive sheds of this type in Europe.

In 2011, the Berlin and Düsseldorf locations were renamed Classic Remise . The “Classic Remise” brand is a brand owned by the owner of the Berlin and Düsseldorf locations; Meilenwerk AG did not own the locations.

Meilenwerk Region Stuttgart (Böblingen)

Motorworld Region Stuttgart

In the spring of 2009, the Meilenwerk was opened on the airfield in Böblingen ( 48 ° 41 ′ 24.1 ″  N , 9 ° 0 ′ 14.6 ″  E ). Part of it was located in a historic building of the former Böblingen Airport . Just as in the earlier Meilenwerke, everything was to be found in one building complex in Böblingen: classic car clubs, parking boxes, service providers, dealers and restaurants. The Böblinger Meilenwerk was designed for the first time with a hotel . Since January 4, 2014 it has been operating under the name Motorworld Region Stuttgart .

The Stuttgart region was never owned by an owner of the “Meilenwerk” brand. The owner of the location has used the brand on the basis of a license agreement and has given up the use of the “Meilenwerk” brand. The Motorworld Region Stuttgart location is continuously being expanded, for example with a Harley-Davidson branch. In 2017, another hotel was opened at the site, the V8 Superior. The areas originally operated under the “Meilenwerk” brand are only part of the area operated under the Motorworld Region Stuttgart brand.
