After the First World War , the volume of traffic in the Düsseldorf area and in the Bergisches Land rose sharply, so that the workshops that were located near Düsseldorf Central Station became too small. The onset of the rapid Ruhr traffic did not allow the project of a new depot to be postponed. So in 1928 began construction of a passenger train - Abstellbahnhofes with attached depot that was to be the prototype of the new unit Bahnbetriebswerke same time who wanted to reduce by uniform standards operating costs.

The central building is the 30-permanent roundhouse made of reinforced concrete , which was built from 1930 to 1931. In 1939, the depot, which is part of the Düsseldorf machinery office of the Reichsbahndirektion Wuppertal, employed around 600 people.

In the Second World War severely damaged the depot Dusseldorf-Abstellbahnhof continued to be used completely. After the end of the steam locomotive era in the mid-1970s, the depot was responsible for maintaining the trains for the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn . The depot has taken on this task to this day.

Classic Remise Düsseldorf

Today's use of the listed roundhouse as "Classic Remise".

The roundhouse has remained unused since then. In 1991 the state capital Düsseldorf added it to the list of monuments . However, this did not prevent further deterioration. The search for a new use was unsuccessful, although plans had come very far to accommodate historic rail vehicles in the roundhouse.

Finally, the roundhouse was taken over by a private museum institution for historic automobiles , Classic Remise , Berlin, to open a branch there. After conversion and restoration, which cost around 15 million euros, the Classic Remise Düsseldorf opened on September 16, 2006.
