Ruhr express traffic
The Ruhr Schnellverkehr (RSV) was a system of fast, steam-driven trains for local rail passenger transport , which ran the most important routes in today's Ruhr area from 1932 to 1939 on a regular schedule . The network was expanded in the following years and extended to the most important cities in the northern Rhineland and western Westphalia . It is therefore an early predecessor of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn .
history
The Düsseldorf-Duisburger Kleinbahn , founded in 1898, was the nucleus of an electrical light rail network between Dortmund, Duisburg and Cologne planned by the Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG) and Siemens-Schuckertwerke (SSW) . This project ultimately failed in 1924 due to the resistance of the mining companies and the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft , which saw it as direct competition.
The Reichsbahn was then obliged to set up a city-connecting local transport system on its own routes. This should include short dwell times and a quarter of an hour. For this purpose, steam locomotives of the series 38 and 78 and so-called “ hundred -door cars” (type C4i-33e and BC4i-33f), which enabled passengers to change quickly, were used.
In addition, the Deutsche Reichsbahn planned the use of type DR 137 288 to 295 multiple units , which was also successful in mid-1938. After only six months, the eight vehicles were handed over to the Saarbrücken Reichsbahndirektion .
Route network
The following routes were opened in the 1930s, most of which are now served by the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn.
Thus, the expansion of the route network up to the Second World War roughly corresponded to the area of today's Rhine-Ruhr transport association .
