Erich Bachträgl (born November 17, 1944 in Frohnleiten , Styria , † November 20, 2011 in Gasselsdorf , Styria) was an Austrian jazz musician ( drums ) and composer .

Live and act

After studying classical drums at the Graz Music Academy (with Franz Nedorost ) and receiving an award as best jazz soloist at the “Vienna Jazz Festival” in 1964, he worked as a musician with Harald Neuwirth , the ORF Big Band , with the Erich Kleinschuster sextet, and in the Trios by Fritz Pauer and Friedrich Gulda . He also played in the bands of Art Farmer , Benny Bailey and Max Greger . He then played with the Piano Conclave of George Gruntz , the NDR Big Band , as well as heavyweight (with Harry Pepl and Hans Salomon ), Andy Haderer's Jazz Ahead , Albert Mair , Heinz von Hermann , Sal Nistico , Lee Harper , Zipflo Reinhardt and Gerd Schuller . From 1981 to 1986 Erich Bachträgl led their own formation “Positive” together with Uli Rennert (with Jeff Wohlgenannt and Scotty Gottwald , LP Gollum - Bellaphon Records ).

From 1985 Bachträgl was an associate professor at the Graz University of Music ; In addition, he worked as a teacher at the Conservatories of the City of Vienna and in Klagenfurt and was (during his time with the NDR Big Band) guest lecturer at the Hamburg University of Music . He wrote the bilingual textbook Modern Rhythm & Reading Script , which has already been published in several editions, and was the first modern jazz drummer in Austria with an academic education.
