Uli Rennert (born September 25, 1960 in Frankfurt am Main ) is an Austrian jazz musician (piano, synthesizer), composer and university teacher.

Life

Rennert was born as the son of the opera singer Anny Schlemm and the conductor Wolfgang Rennert . From 1967 to 1979 he had piano lessons with Norbert Brecht, composition and composition with Hans Kracke at the Dr. Hoch'schen Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main. From 1976 to 1979 he studied trombone and jazz ensemble playing with Albert Mangelsdorff . From 1979 to 1987 he continued his studies at the jazz department of the Graz University of Music with Harald Neuwirth and Helmut Iberer; he attended seminars with George Gruntz , Rob Franken and Peter Herbolzheimer . In 1984 he was a prizewinner of the international competition of the US Keyboard Magazine, combined with a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music . In 1987 he obtained the concert diploma in jazz piano with distinction at the Graz University of Music. He has been an Austrian citizen since 1993.

Artistic activities

From 1981 to 1986 the formation Positive existed in collaboration with Erich Bachträgl (LP Gollum ). In addition, Rennert took part in numerous projects in a wide variety of musical directions, engaged in Tango Nuevo and Latin Music in Klaus John's Tangavan ensembles. In addition, he had regular assignments as a studio musician and arranger. From 1988 to 1993 he worked in the experimentally oriented Trio X-tra with Heinrich von Kalnein and Lars Lindvall . With this ensemble, besides a lively concert activity, two LP / CDs and a commissioned work for the Styriarte were produced.

In 1991 he founded the TimeSquare formation with Frank Schwinn, Achim Tang and Gregor Hilbe , later expanded to include Florian Bramböck . In the following years, in addition to international concert tours, he also undertook several CD and radio productions with TimeSquare , including the album HomePage with David Liebman and Bob Mintzer as guests.

Educational activity

From 1988 to 1990 Rennert led the jazz piano class and an improvisation course at the music school in Leibnitz. In 1989 he began teaching at the Graz University of Music - initially with a teaching position in music electronics, then in 1990 also piano practice. In the following years he also took on improvisation courses and the management of ensembles. In 2003 he qualified as a professor. Univ. Professor in improvisation at the Jazz Institute of the Art University Graz.

From 2002 to 2007 Rennert was course coordinator and chairman of the course commission and course working group for jazz at the University of Art in Graz. During this time, the study plans of the Jazz Institute were thoroughly modernized and adapted to current knowledge and needs of jazz education.

Rennert was a lecturer at national and international seminars for jazz and improvised music - for example at the Puławy Jazz Seminar , at the Sibelius Akatemia and the Helsinki Jazz & Pop Conservatory and at meetings of the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ) in Siena and Freiburg in Breisgau.

Since 2009 he has also been artist in residence at the Basel University of Music for the master’s course in producing / performance in the jazz department.
