Luis Bonilla

Luis Bonilla (* around 1965) is an American jazz trombonist specializing in Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban jazz.

Bonilla is from Costa Rica and grew up in California . He graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a bachelor's degree and the Manhattan School of Music with a master's degree in jazz and composition.

He then worked freelance and as a studio musician, playing with McCoy Tyner , Dizzy Gillespie , Lester Bowie (whom he considers his mentor and with whom he toured), Tom Harrell , Freddie Hubbard , Toshiko Akiyoshi , Willie Colón and Astrud Gilberto and accompanied , among others Tony Bennett , Diana Ross , Marc Anthony , La India, and Mary J. Blige . From 1985 he played in Gerald Wilson's orchestra .

He recorded several albums under his own name.

Bonilla is a member of the Mingus Big Band , the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. He received a Grammy in 2009 with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Arturo O'Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra .

In 2010 and 2011 he won Down Beat's Critics Poll in the Rising Star category for trombone.

He has taught at the Manhattan School of Music , Temple University, and the New England Conservatory of Music. He is currently professor for jazz trombone at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz .
