history

The competition was organized for the first time in 1989 at what was then the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz on the initiative of Otto Kolleritsch . Since then, chamber musicians have been gathering every three years at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz to represent themselves in three categories of an international jury.

The duo for voice and piano (lied) , trio for piano, violin and violoncello and string quartet have been represented since 2012 . Before that there were also other chamber music disciplines such as B. Duo for violin and piano and Duo for flute and piano as well as piano solo (from a chamber music perspective). In 2021, for the first time, only two sections will be held: Duo for voice and piano (lied) , Trio for piano, violin and violoncello .

The winners include many musicians, chamber music ensembles and song duos known today, such as the Jerusalem Quartet , the Schumann Quartet , the Belenus Quartet, the Minetti Quartet , the ATOS Trio , the Morgenstern Trio, Peter Schöne with pianist Norie Takahashi, Bernhard Berchtold with pianist Irina Puryshinskaja and Michael Wendeberg .

The specifics of this competition at the Art University Graz are the compilation of the repertoires with their equal comparison of tradition and modernity up to contemporary compositions. Above all, accuracy is required when dealing with contemporary works and the recurring critical preoccupation with tradition. Written documentation in book form and CD recordings have been available for every competition since 1997. Together with the Mozart Competition in Salzburg and the Beethoven Competition in Vienna, this competition is one of the largest classical music competitions in Austria.

Composition competitions

To expand the repertoire of the trio for piano, violin and violoncello division, an international composition competition has been announced in advance of every competition since 2006. The winning work is then programmed as a compulsory piece in the respective category. In 2017 another composition competition in the duo for voice and piano (song) category was announced. The repertoire of the competition sections is also constantly updated to include new and newest compositions.

The winner of the 2017 International Piano Trio Composition Competition is Jungjik Kim (South Korea). Sehyung (Sergej) Kim (Kazakhstan) was the winner of the 2017 song composition competition for setting a poem by Selma Merbaum to music.

A composition competition was also announced in the run-up to the 11th International Chamber Music Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music”. For this purpose, contemporary compositions for piano trio by 151 composers from 44 nations were accepted for participation in March 2020. The prize-winner expects a prize money of 5,000 euros as well as the world premiere as part of the 11th International Chamber Music Competition "Franz Schubert and Modern Music" in February 2021.
