Michael Wendeberg

Michael Wendeberg (born April 8, 1974 in Ebingen , Swabian Alb ) is a German conductor and pianist. In April 2018, after seven years as musical director, he was appointed first guest conductor of the Ensemble Contrechamps in Geneva. Since 2016 he has also been the first conductor at the Halle Opera.

Life

Michael Wendeberg received his first piano lessons at the age of five and won the first federal prizes in the Jugend musiziert competition . From 1994 he studied piano with Jürgen Uhde , Markus Stange, Bernd Glemser and Benedetto Lupo. Wendeberg made his debut at the Lucerne Festival , Carnegie Hall and the Salzburg Festival . He has also appeared as a soloist with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra , the radio symphony orchestras of NDR, WDR, HR and SWR and the Berlin Philharmonic , under the conductors Jonathan Nott and Sir Simon Rattle . His chamber music partners include Laurent Korcia , with whom he has recorded several CDs, and Nicolas Hodges . From 2000 to 2005 Wendeberg was a pianist with the Ensemble intercontemporain , where he worked intensively with Pierre Boulez . On the occasion of Boulez's 90th birthday in March 2015, he could be heard with his entire piano works in the Schillertheater Berlin.

From 2005 Michael Wendeberg studied orchestral conducting in the master class of the conductor Toshiyuki Kamioka in Saarbrücken.

As a conductor he has worked with the Staatskapelle Berlin (especially regularly with Mozart's Magic Flute ), the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne , Klangforum Wien , Sinfonietta Basel, Remix Ensemble Porto, the Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Ensemble Ascolta , Staatsopern-Kammerchor Apollini et Musis, the Philharmonie Ljubljana and the Collegium Novum Zurich . His ensembles have been heard at the Munich Biennale , the Bregenz Festival , musicadhoy Madrid, Wien Modern , the Eclat Festival Stuttgart, the Klangspuren Schwaz , the Venice Biennale and the Lucerne Festival .

In the 2008/2009 season he worked as an assistant under Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin. Two seasons later, Michael Wendeberg was part of the musical direction at the Nationaltheater Mannheim . From 2011 to 2014 he was Kapellmeister and Deputy General Music Director at the Lucerne Theater .

Michael Wendeberg is currently the musical director of the Contrechamps Ensemble (Geneva) and permanent guest conductor of the Yerewan State Opera. Since the 2016/17 season Wendeberg has been working as 1st Kapellmeister at the Halle Opera . Further engagements in the 2016/17 season include his debut concert with Ensemble Modern in Brussels and an opera production at the Berlin State Opera workshop. Since February 2020 he has also directed the Youth Symphony Orchestra Saxony-Anhalt.

In his work he combines the handling of the classical repertoire from Bach to Schönberg and the intensive preoccupation with new and newest music.
