Jonathan Nott
Jonathan Nott (born December 25, 1962 in Solihull ) is an English conductor . He has been Principal Conductor of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and Music Director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra since 2014, and Music Director and Artistic Director of the Orchester de la Suisse Romande since 2017 .
Training and first artistic stations
Jonathan Nott studied musicology at Cambridge University , singing and flute in Manchester and conducting in London . He made his conducting debut in 1988 at the Batignano Opera Festival . In the following year he became Kapellmeister at the Frankfurt Opera , before he took over the position of First Kapellmeister at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden in 1991 , a house which he also led on an interim basis as General Music Director in the 1995/1996 season. Jonathan Nott conducted a broad spectrum of opera, ballet and musical literature in the Hessian state capital, especially the great works by Mozart , Verdi and Puccini as well as Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen . The Briton later went to the Lucerne Theater as music director and was also chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra (1997–2002). At the same time he was the musical director of the Paris- based ensemble intercontemporain founded by Pierre Boulez (2000–2003), one of the most important formations for the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. As a guest conductor, he remains closely associated with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Jonathan Nott is considered an excellent interpreter of contemporary music and has premiered a large number of works, including music by Brian Ferneyhough , Helmut Lachenmann and Aribert Reimann , as well as compositions commissioned by the Bamberg Symphony by Jörg Widmann , Wolfgang Rihm , Bruno Mantovani and Mark-Anthony Turnage .

National and international concert activity
From January 2000 to September 2016, Jonathan Nott was chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra - Bavarian State Philharmonic . Since the beginning of his tenure he has made guest appearances with the orchestra at important music festivals in Germany and abroad, and there have been extensive tours throughout Germany and Europe, to China and several times to Japan , South America and the USA .
Jonathan Nott performed with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2003 and at the Salzburg Festival in 2004 . In 2005 the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra returned to Edinburgh with him on the podium as “orchestra in residence”, followed in 2007 by appearances at the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg and at the Lucerne Festival , at which Nott presented himself as “artiste étoile” and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra as "Orchestra in residence" presented. Shortly thereafter, a concert in honor of Pope Benedict XVI followed. in the Pontifical Summer Residence Castel Gandolfo - the occasion was the anniversary "1000 years of the Diocese of Bamberg ". In 2008 Jonathan Nott and the orchestra were invited to the Beijing Music Festival, and in the 2009/2010 season a third joint tour of Japan and a concert tour to Spain and Andorra took place .
The artistic projects of the 2010/2011 season included a fourth joint tour of South America, guest performances in China, appearances at the Musikfest Berlin , the Wiener Konzerthaus , Zurich and the Linz Brucknerhaus, as well as a tour to Belgium and the Netherlands .
Artistic work
The repertoire maintained by Jonathan Nott in Bamberg ranges from the Viennese classical period to the masterpieces of the 19th century and classical modernism to contemporary music. A focus of his artistic work was initially the examination of the symphonic works of Franz Schubert , which was combined with works from the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2008 Jonathan Nott performed all nine of Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies on four evenings in Bamberg , and in 2009 he conducted a cycle of the symphonies by Johannes Brahms . For several years the work of Gustav Mahler - the symphonies and orchestral songs - has moved into the center of his programs and concerts, in Bamberg as well as at national and international guest performances by the orchestra. As part of the 1st Bamberg Biennale 2010, he will conduct performances of Mahler's Symphonies No. 8 (Symphony of a Thousand) and 9 , the Song of the Earth and the Adagio from the unfinished Symphony No. 10 .
Beyond pure orchestral works, compositions with the participation of the human voice occupy a large space in Jonathan Nott's conducting. Under his direction, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra performed Mahler's symphonies No. 2 , 3 , 4 and the Lied von der Erde further important vocal symphonic works, including Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem and György Ligeti's Requiem . There were also concert performances of great operas, namely Beethoven's Fidelio and Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde , Das Rheingold , Die Walküre and Siegfried . In 2009 Jonathan Nott directed several performances of Joseph Haydn's Azione teatrale L'isola disabitata at the Bamberg ETA-Hoffmann-Theater ; The internationally renowned designer Peter Schmidt took over the direction of this scenic production .
After 2004, 2007 and 2010, Jonathan Nott was again President of the jury of the three-year international “Bamberg Symphony Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition” in spring 2013.
CD recordings
The artistic partnership between Jonathan Notts and the Bamberg Symphony is documented in a large number of CD productions. Recordings of Mahler's symphonies No. 1 , 2 (Resurrection Symphony ) , 3, 4 , 5 and 9 , Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 3 (first version 1873), Igor Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps and symphony in three movements, and Leoš have been released Janáček's Sinfonietta , Taras Bulba and the suite from The Cunning Little Vixen . A complete recording of the Schubert symphonies was supplemented by two CDs with contemporary works that deal programmatically with the theme of “Schubert”, including compositions by Hans Werner Henze , Wolfgang Rihm , Jörg Widmann and Bruno Mantovani . In 2013 Nott recorded a CD with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra with arias from various Wagner operas with Klaus Florian Vogt (tenor) and Camilla Nylund (soprano).
Chief Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Orchester de la Suisse Romande
In July 2014 Jonathan Nott became Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie . In September 2014, he took over the position of music director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra - his contract there has since been extended to 2026. In addition, Jonathan Nott became Music Director and Artistic Director of the Orchester de la Suisse Romande in January 2017 .
Guest conductor
Since the 1990s, Jonathan Nott has worked as a guest conductor with almost all major symphony orchestras in Europe and the USA, including the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam , the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg , the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig , the Orchester de Paris and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich , the Viennese and the Munich Philharmonic , New York , Los Angeles and London Philharmonic as well as the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo . With the Berliner Philharmoniker , Jonathan Nott recorded all of György Ligeti's orchestral works including the Requiem on CD.

Jonathan Nott is married to Helen Nott from England. The couple have two sons and a daughter.
