geography

The place is 12 km north of the main town and the provincial capital Grosseto . The place is 150  meters above sea level and has about 600 inhabitants. It is located on a southern branch of the Monte Leoni mountain (614 m). Neighboring towns are Sticciano (north, municipality Roccastrada), Montorsaio (northeast, municipality Campagnatico ), Roselle (south) and Montepescali (southwest, both districts of Grosseto). The place is surrounded by a medieval wall ring (12th-14th centuries) that is still partially in place today. The northern entrance gate is the Porta Senese , the southern one the Porta Grossetana .

history

The place was first documented in 1119, when the Visconti family , vassals of the Aldobrandeschi , ruled. The document, a donation, comes from the children and widow of Paganuccio Visconte . At that time, mining, especially for silver and lead , became important to the place. Ugolino Visconti negotiated a contract with the Republic of Siena in 1178 , which gave it a third of the creative rights. Relations with the Aldobrandeschi remained unaffected. Ildebrandino Aldobrandeschi set Manto di Grosseto (Manto di Guglielmo degli Abati di Malia) as ruler for the Castello in 1213, the mines remained with the Aldobrandeschi. After the death of Manto in 1231, the Suvera family ruled (also Sughera , relatives of the Visconti) who, after the battle of Montaperti , submitted to the re-energized Republic of Siena. Then the place fell to the family branch of the Aldobrandeschi from Santa Fiora . In the early 14th century, the Fonteguerri and then the Piccolomini from Siena took control of the place, who then sold the place to the Republic of Siena in 1363. The place gave itself the first statutes in 1373. After the defeat of the Republic of Siena against Cosimo I de 'Medici Batignano went with Siena into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany .
