Camilla Nylund (born June 11, 1968 in Vaasa , Finland ) is a Finnish opera singer ( soprano ). Her specialization in the dramatic soprano genre explains the focus on her roles in works by Richard Wagner , Ludwig van Beethoven , Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Strauss . Since 1999 she has been married to Anton Saris , a Dutch tenor. She lives with him and their two daughters in the Weißer Hirsch district of Dresden .

Life

Camilla Nylund first studied musicology in Turku and singing at the local conservatory until she was accepted at the Salzburg Mozarteum University . From 1995 to 1999 she worked at the Lower Saxony State Opera in Hanover , after which she got an engagement in the ensemble of the Semperoper in Dresden , where she worked until 2002. Nylund owed her honor there with the Christel Goltz Prize , among other things, to her appearances as Marie in The Bartered Bride , as Agathe in Freischütz or as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte .

In Irmgard Boas (Dresden) she receives since 2003 additional perfection in their specialty lyric-dramatic soprano . Nylund's international breakthrough came in the 2004/05 season with three role debuts: as Elisabeth in Wagner's Tannhäuser , as well as in the title roles of Wilde / Strauss' Salome at the Cologne Opera and Beethoven's Fidelio at the Zurich Opera House . All three roles are still part of the core of her repertoire. One of the highlights of her career was the big premiere in the Dresden Frauenkirche (immediately after the consecration of the restored church in November 2005, it was also tested acoustically in its function as a new “music hall”). Beethoven's Missa solemnis was performed. Christian Elsner (tenor), Camilla Nylund (soprano), René Pape (bass) and Birgit Remmert (alto) sang in the 80-minute mass under the direction of Fabio Luisi and with great applause from the audience .

Since then, Camilla Nylund has appeared in numerous renowned international opera houses, in addition to twelve European countries, at the New National Theater Tokyo in Japan and several times in the USA. At least since her first debut as the Mermaid Rusalka in Antonín Dvořák 's romantic opera of the same name, this title role has continued through her further career: Salzburg Festival (2008), Royal Opera House (London 2011), Liceu (Barcelona 2012) and the Grand Théâtre de Genève (2013). This shows the versatility of their skills even in difficult situations that modern stage versions often demand from the performers. So she had to sing the song “An den Mond” in the version by Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito to an oversized cat, lying down and wearing a closed mermaid lower part. At the Bayreuth Festival , she played Elisabeth in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser from 2011 .

In 2014 Nylund had 21 appearances, including the role of the prima donna in Ariadne auf Naxos ( Oper Frankfurt ), as Salome in the Berlin State Opera , as Fürstin Werdenberg in Der Rosenkavalier ( Grand théâtre de la ville de Luxembourg ) and as a soprano in the 9th Symphony (Beethoven) in the Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles). In 2015 there were 18 engagements in 8 European countries. In January 2017 Nylund made her debut as soprano in Beethoven's Missa solemnis at the three-week opening festival of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie together with Sarah Connolly ( mezzo-soprano ), Klaus Florian Vogt ( tenor ), Luca Pisaroni ( bass baritone ) and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Jeffrey Tate . She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera , New York in December 2019 as Fürstin Werdenberg in Rosenkavalier ; she sang this role in February 2020 at the Berlin State Opera under Zubin Mehta , directed by André Heller .
