Irmgard Boas (born November 22, 1928 in Pohritzsch ) is a German opera singer specializing in dramatic-highly dramatic soprano .

Life

Irmgard Boas studied singing with Eleonore Sadowska (Halle) and Werner Reichelt (Dresden), who had a decisive influence on her career.

Her first three-year engagement took her as a dramatic soprano to the Stadttheater Köthen, where she made her debut as Tosca at the age of 26, and other roles a. a. Amelia in the masked ball , Maria Tudor in The Favorite , Martha in Tiefland , Nastasia "Kuma" in The Sorceress , Mimi in La Bohème , and Mrs. Fluth in The Funny Wives of Windsor .

From 1959 to 1961 she was engaged by Kurt Masur at the Mecklenburgische Staatstheater Schwerin, where she sang roles such as Venus in Nestroys Tannhäuser , Elisabeth in Don Carlos , Polissena in Handel's Radamisto and the soprano part in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana .

The construction of the Berlin Wall prevented the continuation of her singing career in the western part of Germany: In 1961 Irmgard Boas had already terminated her contract in Schwerin and was in contract negotiations with Wolfgang Sawallisch to negotiate the conditions for an engagement at the Frankfurt Opera when she drove back to the GDR on August 12, 1961 because of an illness of her then three-month-old daughter. On the night of August 13, 1961, the border between the two German states was finally sealed off, making it impossible for Irmgard Boas to become involved in the west. The planned route to the West meant a turning point for the opera singer in the GDR as well, because after that she was initially no longer employed. In October 1961 she moved to East Berlin and worked as a freelancer.

During this time she sang Leonore in The Troubadour with Helge Rosvaenge as Manrico . Further piece contracts as Agathe in Der Freischütz , Lisa in Queen of Spades , Lady Macbeth in Macbeth and the Countess in Marriage of Figaro followed.

In 1964 she received a permanent engagement at the Erfurt Opera House . There, under the direction of General Music Director Ude Nissen , she worked on the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier , Abigail in Nabucco , Donna Anna in Don Giovanni , Leonore in Fidelio , Senta in The Flying Dutchman , Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus , Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana , the Princess in Rusalka , the sexton in Jenůfa , Boulotte in Knight Bluebeard and title roles in Turandot and Aida . In 1973 she was appointed chamber singer.

From 1974 to 1988 Irmgard Boas was at the Landestheater Halle. During this time she worked with the conductors Thomas Sanderling , Volker Rohde and Christian Kluttig . Her Salome received special national recognition. But Turandot, Aida, Leonore in Fidelio , Senta, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser and Chrysothemis in Elektra also remained top performers until the end of their careers.

She connected ongoing piece contracts with the Leipzig Opera House, the Dresden State Opera and the Berlin State Opera. Guest appearances have taken her to Leningrad, Kiev, Macerata (Italy) and Bytom (Poland).

In 1981 she received a teaching assignment for singing at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin , where she also took on the training of her daughter Christiane Hossfeld . In 1999 she finished her teaching position in Berlin.

In 2003 Irmgard Boas moved to Dresden and works as a singing teacher for numerous celebrated opera singers. Her students include a. Klaus Florian Vogt , the Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund , Barbara Senator and Christiane Hossfeld.
