The Alte Oper is a venue in the Thuringian capital of Erfurt . It is located in the southwest of the old town on Gorkistraße, just under 400 meters south of the cathedral . The house has a hall with 970 seats, a revolving stage and 32 trains .

history

The old opera was built in 1867 by Heinrich Sahlender in the classical style . At first it served as a summer theater. In 1892 the city of Erfurt bought the house and between 1893 and 1895 had it converted into a municipal theater and opera house by city planner Paul Peters . On September 15, 1894, the opening of the new "City Theater" was celebrated, which had standing and seats, and in which operas , operettas , antics with singing, plays and ballet performances were subsequently performed . The house also became the seat and main venue of the Erfurt Orchestra , which also performed symphony concerts there . A constantly recurring problem, however, was the poor building fabric, which led to the building being closed by the building police for the first time in 1896 and more frequently in later years. From 1923 the city was also responsible for the financing.

During the time of National Socialism , the name was changed to "Deutsches Volkstheater" under the direction loyal to the regime. Although the opera house was spared air raids in World War II , only a few performances took place there in the last years of the war. With the consent and approval of the Soviet military administration , the house was able to reopen as a “city theater” on June 21, 1945; from 1956 it was part of the “Städtische Bühnen Erfurt” and was renamed “Opera House”. In 1969 a comprehensive renovation took place.

Due to building regulations, the old opera had to be closed on June 8, 1997, whereupon the Erfurt theater only used the theater in the cloister corridor. Since the city of Erfurt estimated the renovation of the old opera at DM 80,000,000 , it decided to build a new building for the theater, which was moved into in 2003.

The future of the old building was initially unclear, and demolition was also considered. From 2003 the house was leased on a long-term basis by the Erfurt entrepreneur and current director, Wolfgang Staub , renovated for around 2,000,000 euros and reopened on September 15, 2004 as a venue for operettas, musicals, revues, cabarets and concerts. The Alte Oper Erfurt is today one of the three venues of Staub's event and congress center DASDIE. For his achievements, Staub was nominated by the Thüringer Allgemeine as a candidate for the City of Erfurt's Culture Prize.
