The City of Erfurt Culture Prize has been an art prize awarded by the City of Erfurt since 1966 .

history

A “ Culture Prize of the City of Erfurt ” was awarded by the City of Erfurt between 1966 and 1989 on the basis of a council resolution of May 12, 1966 . People were to be honored "whose cultural work was particularly meaningful for Erfurt" and "for works that correspond to the humanistic traditions of the city of Erfurt and promote the development of the German socialist national culture, as well as for outstanding new creations, for example scientific research work or cultural-political achievements". Until 1989, individuals received a cash bonus of up to 3000 GDR marks , and collectives could receive up to 10,000 marks. Many of the award winners were employees of the city administration themselves.

After the fall of the Wall there were no more awards until 1996. By statute of August 20, 1996, the city of Erfurt decided to award culture prizes again. Since then, the prize has been publicly awarded every two years. It is intended to recognize “outstanding achievements in the field of the visual arts, the performing arts, literature and music, which either through the person or through the work are related to the state capital Erfurt.” Every citizen of the state of Thuringia has the right to propose possible award winners who have achieved outstanding cultural achievements. This prize is currently endowed with 5000 euros .
