The city church Crivitz is a listed building in Crivitz , a town in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). The church is a landmark of the place and dominates the cityscape with the high church roof and the tower. The community belongs to the Wismar provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

History and architecture

There are no remains of the first church in Crivitz. Remains of the foundations in the sacristy that have been preserved probably belong to a successor. The current building was probably built in brick at the end of the 14th century. While maintaining the ground plan, it has undergone a number of changes over the centuries. Your final present appearance received the church after the reconstruction of the tower and roof after the fire in 1660. At the church hall to three Jochen adds to the east, a low chorus in the width of the central nave that he closes polygon, north of it is the sacristy with ribbed vault . In the interior, the main and side aisles are separated by octagonal pillars in the late Gothic style . The bright choir room is dominated by a reticulated vault from the 15th century. The color scheme was renewed based on a medieval model. In the 19th century, the interior was redesigned in line with contemporary tastes ; the imitation vault with plastering that was built in was renovated in 1998. Also in the 19th century a three-sided wooden gallery was built in, the central aisle was removed. A staircase leads from the tower room to the belfry. During renovations at the beginning of the 21st century, it was found that during the Renaissance the entire interior was decorated with ornaments and figurines. The restoration is still ongoing.

Frescoes

The frescoes were found and uncovered during renovations in the 1950s. The oldest representations probably date from the time the church was built around 1380; they are apostle figures .

Frescoes before 1600

The frescoes in the choir were painted around 1430, the representations show scenes from the life of Jesus. In the lower part of the triumphal arch a woman is shown with a child, probably Mary with the baby Jesus. Another fresco shows “ Noli me tangere ” (Jesus and Maria Magdalena on Easter morning). The next illustration shows Jesus empowering his disciples to forgive sins. Furthermore, Maria is depicted as the Madonna of the Protective Coat. The birth of Jesus is hardly recognizable due to damage. In addition, Mary with little Jesus and Simeon can be seen in the temple and the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple.

Frescoes after 1600

The frescoes from around 1600 show the paradise garden as a disc of the earth , in a similar way as Lucas Cranach drew it for the first Luther Bible from 1534. God the Father hovers as Creator over the garden surrounded by the four winds, sun, moon and stars. The tablets on the north wall bear the text of the Last Judgment. The portrait of Martin Luther bears the Latin inscription : When I was alive, I was a plague for you, when I die I will be your death, Pope .

Furnishing

The church has a rich interior from different centuries.

  • The figure group Schächer am Kreuz is a work by Wieland Schmiedel from Crivitz
  • The stele next to the south entrance also comes from Schmiedel, it is one of the steles that mark the way of the prisoners from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in memory of the so-called death march on the B 321 .
  • The crucifix from the 15th century was probably part of a triumphal cross, it has been hanging between the nave and the choir since 1986.
  • The oldest part of the furnishings is probably the baptismal font from the 13th century, made of Gotland sand-lime brick. The piece may still originate from the first church building, the shaft was lost and was replaced in the 19th century.
  • The carved altar from around 1520 originally stood in the town church in Teterow , it was extensively renovated in 1959 and then rebuilt in Crivitz. In the middle, as the central figure, stands Mary with the child on a crescent moon, she is accompanied by the figures of Saints Paul, Barbara of Nicodemia, Mary Magdalene, John, Catherine of Alexandria, Peter, John the Baptist and Catherine.
  • The oil painting depicting the Holy Night by Correggio is a copy by Johann Heinrich Suhrlandt
  • The painting with Martin Luther is also a copy.
  • Jürgen Diestel created the cross in the sacristy.
  • An epitaph in the form of a coffin lid has been preserved for the second wife of the prepositus Schachtschneier .
  • A sundial is attached to the outer wall .
  • The choir stalls were made of oak in the 14th century and later redesigned in a neo-Gothic style.

West tower and bells

The massive tower on the west side stands over a rectangular floor plan, it has three floors and is covered with a hipped roof crowned by a weathercock . The total height is 40 meters. Memorial plaques for those who fell in several wars are on display in the tower room.

The belfry dates from 1736. The bell from the time the church was built was cast in the workshop of Rickert de Monkehagen . The so-called christening bell was cast in 1926 and hangs in a sound hole on the eastern side. Two more bells from 2011 from the Perner workshop complete the ringing, which sounds in the tones es' - f '- g' - g ''.
