Rickert de Monkehagen
Rickert de Monkehagen (also Rickert de Monikehagen ) was a bell foundry workshop that worked in several cities in northeast Germany, but was probably headquartered in and around Rostock . It was active from 1376 to 1464, and its most productive period was the first half of the 15th century. Numerous bells are still preserved.
history
The first evidence of activity in the workshop of Rickert de Monkehagen comes from the year 1376. The workshop is considered to be the most important in the 14th and 15th centuries in Mecklenburg and Pomerania, which is evidenced by the large number of bells still standing.
The craft of bell casting was carried out on site because of the difficulty of transporting fuel and raw material as well as the finished bells, which makes it impossible to assign the workshop to a location. Most of the proven bells are concentrated in and around Rostock, which suggests that the workshop was probably headquartered here. Furthermore, a connection to the Doberan monastery is assumed as the client, since many Monkehagens bells can be found in villages that previously belonged to the monastery. Presumably due to the high quality of the Monkehagen bells, the area of activity of the workshop expanded. Found foundry marks next to that of the Monkehagen workshop on a bell in Anklam and different styles of ornamentation suggest that the workshop was operated by several masters. Proof of this is the long duration of action. The sources do not yet allow any more detailed statements about the workshop.
In the Rostock district of Dierkow , the Rickertring is a street named after Rickert de Monkehagen.
