Church in Rechov

The village church Retschow is a late medieval village church in Retschow in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The parish of Steffenshagen-Retschow belongs to the church region of Bad Doberan in the Rostock provost of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

Building description

Look into the tower

The village church of Retschow is a single-aisled gothic church with pillars and a single -bay choir . The end of the choir in the east is formed by a divided octagon. The western tower in front was built from wood in 1653. The small bell dates from 1443 and has the mark of the foundry Rickert von Mönchshagen.

history

The church and thus Retschow was first mentioned in the year 1233. On June 18, 1358 the farm and village Retschow came into the possession of the Doberan Monastery . With the secularization of Doberan Monastery on March 7, 1552, Retschow went to the sovereign domanium .

Significant damage to the building has occurred over the years. Foundations were eroded and subsidence occurred. A development association founded in 2008 has been collecting donations since then and has already been able to acquire a considerable amount of own funds for the necessary renovation. The sacristies on the north and south sides have already been secured so that outside support is no longer necessary. As soon as sufficient funds are available, the next step is to renovate the choir closure in the east. Emergency securing via supports from the outside is not easily possible here due to the octagonal shape.

Furnishing

altar

The church houses a rare twice-convertible altar from the second half of the 15th century. The holiday side shows gilded and painted carvings. The coronation of Mary is depicted in the center of the central shrine . The other altar is divided across and shows Jesus, various saints and an undetermined bishop.

The outer wings show the twelve apostles . At the bottom right in the middle you can see Andreas by his cross .

On the first change (the wings are folded towards the middle) eight scenes from the passion story are shown. The cycle begins with the Lord's Supper and ends with the Crucifixion . This change is shown at Easter .

The second change (two more wings are folded to the middle) is shown during the Christmas season and depicts Gregory's mass , the holy clan , the sacrament mill and the Annunciation to Mary .

Of both changes, only the depictions of the sacrament mill and the holy clan have already been restored . The remaining pictures are currently only saved and in a rather poor condition.

pulpit

free-standing pulpit

The pulpit , which stands free today, dates from 1565. The evangelists John , Luke , Mark and Matthew are depicted on four sides . The fifth page does not contain any representations, as this page was covered by the north wall of the church until 1969.

The pulpit was moved to the interior for security purposes. The original location to the left of the entrance to the north sacristy can still be recognized by the fresh color.

Frescoes

Originally all the interior walls of the church were painted with frescoes . Presumably in the course of the Reformation it was painted over with white paint. It was only in the last few decades that some of the images were exposed.

Important scenes from the life of Mary are depicted on the south wall of the church. The birth of Jesus is shown below, above the offering in the temple , the death of Mary with her acceptance into heaven, and the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple. The coronation of Mary is shown in the upper third.

On the north wall, Jesus is depicted as judge of the world with two swords . On the left stand the good people, led by an angel, on the right the bad people are led by the devil.

Further frescoes from around 1400 are located above the gallery with the organ. Left a representation of the Annunciation and right Adam and Eve . Several small pictures show different saints.

Choir stalls

The choir stalls are from 1659 and have medieval remains.
