Thomas Sanderling (born October 2, 1942 in Novosibirsk , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a German conductor , with Russian citizenship since 2009.

Life

Thomas Sanderling is the son of the conductor Kurt Sanderling and his first wife Nina Schey. During his father's exile, Thomas Sanderling was born in the Soviet Union and began his training with the study of the violin at the special school of the Leningrad Conservatory . From 1960 he studied at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin . In 1962 he made his debut as a conductor . Consultations with Hans Swarowsky and assistance with Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein followed .

Stations in his career were initially in Sondershausen and Reichenbach in the Vogtland , before he was appointed music director in Halle (Saale) in 1966 , where he worked on an extensive concert and opera repertoire. In 1971 he was awarded the Handel Prize of the Halle district as a member of the opera ensemble of the Halle State Theater . In 1978 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera , then at the Bavarian State Opera . This was followed by the call of permanent guest conductor at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin .

In 1983 he settled in the Federal Republic of Germany . Between 1984 and 1986 he was artistic director of the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. In the further course of his career he conducted at many important opera houses, including Teatro La Fenice Venice, Bolshoi Theater Moscow, Mariinsky Theater Saint Petersburg, Opera Nice , Deutsche Oper Berlin , Komische Oper Berlin and Hamburg State Opera .

Thomas Sanderling worked regularly with renowned orchestras, including the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Philharmonia Orchestra , London Symphony Orchestra , Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , NDR Symphony Orchestra , WDR Symphony Orchestra , Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra , Russian National Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra and many more. International soloists he has worked with include David Oistrach , Emil Gilels , Gidon Kremer , José van Dam , Ferruccio Furlanetto, Gundula Janowitz , Robert Holl , Andrej Hoteev , Rudolf Buchbinder , Natalia Gutman , Sergei Leiferkus , Anna Malikova , Paul Tortelier and Walter Berry . He is a regular guest conductor with the radio orchestras in Germany, principal guest conductor of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moscow National Philharmonic Orchestra. The Osaka Symphony Orchestra, with which Sanderling twice won the Local Critics' Grand Prix, awarded him the title of "Lifetime Honorary Music Director".

Thomas Sanderling had a special friendship with the Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich and his family. After the composer was present at Sanderling's Moscow debut, Shostakovich entrusted the young conductor with the German premieres of his 13th and 14th symphonies as well as their German text translations. The first CD recording of the Michelangelo Suite followed. Sanderling's first recording of Shostakovich's song cycles for orchestra on Deutsche Grammophon was presented in September 2006 in the British magazine The Gramophone in the “The Editor's Choice” category. Further premieres of the translations of Dmitri Shostakovich's song cycles followed in concerts and first recordings in Munich with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra .

In May 2013, Sanderling conducted the world premiere of the last opera by the Russian composer Mieczysław Weinberg , Der Idiot nach Fjodor Dostojewski , at the Mannheim National Theater . In October 2013 further Shostakovich projects were realized with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and baritone Gerald Finley .

As early as 2002, Sanderling was also a guest conductor with the symphony orchestra in his native Novosibirsk . In 2009 he became a Russian citizen. In 2017 he became chief conductor of the orchestra.

The artistic work of Thomas Sanderling is documented by numerous recordings, which have received multiple awards. He won the Cannes Classical Award for the recordings of Gustav Mahler's 6th Symphony with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and all of Albéric Magnard's symphonies . His complete recording of all Brahms symphonies with the Philharmonia Orchestra London for the Brahms anniversary has found worldwide recognition. The recording of Paul Kletzki's piano concerto with Joseph Banowetz as a soloist even earned him a Grammy nomination.

Thomas Sanderling's half-brothers are also musicians: the conductor Stefan Sanderling and the conductor and cellist Michael Sanderling .
