Michael Ehret (* 5. February 1969 in Basel ) is a German jazz - drummer .

Career

Michael Ehret - son of the opera singer Eva Hildebrandt - received classical piano lessons from the age of ten and then classical percussion training with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Freiburg im Breisgau . He took master classes with Michael Küttner , John Stanley Marshall , Wolfgang Haffner and Jeff Hamilton .

Ehret first studied political science and ethnology in Marburg before he decided to become a professional musician (after winning first prize in the Hessian youth jazz competition in 1993 and becoming a member of the Hessen State Youth Jazz Orchestra). Ehret has been working as a drummer and composer for the German comedian Martin Schneider since 1996 . In 1997 he co-produced his debut CD "Aschebeschär" and performed with him from 1998 to 2007 on numerous tours and on television programs. From 1999 to 2004 he played in a quartet led by Hammond organist Klaus Göbel and jazz guitarist Michael Sagmeister (bass: Thomas Heidepriem ). The Klaus Göbel Group played in 2000 - a CD "Finally Back Home" - crowned by the press to the organ record of the year.

In 2005 Michael Ehret became a permanent member of the Barrelhouse Jazz Band . He toured festivals in China, Libya, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and the Netherlands with the group around band leader Reimer von Essen , who were awarded the honorary citizenship (“Honorary Citizen of New Orleans”) of the city of New Orleans on May 14, 1968 , France, Tunisia, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Poland and Finland and accompanied a. a. the jazz soloists Scott Hamilton , Red Holloway , Leroy Jones , Dan Barrett , Miles Griffith , Gene "Mighty Flea" Conners , Rod Mason , Tanya Boutté and Lucien Barbarin . At the 40th International Jazz Week in Burghausen , the Barrelhouse Jazzband made a guest appearance in March 2009 together with the US vocal group Manhattan Transfer for a television production by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) .

Joe Wulf brought him into his band Joe Wulf & the Gentlemen of Swing as a permanent member at the end of 2014 . At other concerts he also played a. a. with Kevin Mahogany , Thilo Wagner , Evan Christopher , Eden Brent , Duke Heitger , Tony Lakatos , Engelbert Wrobel , Christof Sänger , Brenda Boykin , Denise Gordon, Scotty Barnhart, Matt Perrine, Dirk Raufeisen , Lindy Huppertsberg , Thomas Siffling , Little Willie Littlefield , Jesse Jones Jr., Joan Faulkner , Movin 'Melvin Brown, Albert Mangelsdorff and Guildo Horn together.

In 2004 and 2005 Ehret was a lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main . He lives in Marburg an der Lahn, where he has been teaching drums in the rock-pop-jazz department at the music school since 1994. He is also dedicated to painting and the life and work of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy . He is the author of numerous national and international specialist articles and contributor to the ZDF / ARTE documentaries "Laurel & Hardy: The comical love story of Dick and Doof" (2011), "Hollywood's fun factory: When the pictures learned to laugh" (2014) and "Harold Lloyd : Hollywood's Timeless Comedy Genius "(2017), all directed by Andreas Baum . Ehret is also the author of the books "60 Years of Barrelhouse Jazz Band: Living the Music" and "Laurel and Hardy: Spot On!".

Awards

In 1992 he received 1st prize at the 2nd state youth jazz competition in Hesse , and in 1994 2nd prize at the Hessian state rock competition . "Swinging Hamburg"; the Society for the Promotion of Traditional Jazz in Hamburg awarded the Frankfurt Barrelhouse Jazzband the “Louis Armstrong Memorial Prize” in 2013.
