Red Holloway (actually James Wesley Holloway , * 31 May 1927 in Helena , Arkansas ; † 24. February 2012 ) was an American blues - and jazz - saxophonist and singer .

Life

"Red" Holloway grew up in Chicago and had first lessons from his mother, a church organist. He first played the banjo and harmonica, then switched to the tenor saxophone when he was twelve years old. At DuSable High School he played in the school big band with Johnny Griffin and Eugene Wright ; he then studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. During his military service he played in the US Fifth Army Band , then returned to Chicago and played there a. a. with Yusef Lateef and Dexter Gordon .

In 1948 he accompanied the blues singer Roosevelt Sykes (who was a school friend of his mother) and later played with other blues musicians such as Willie Dixon , Junior Parker , Lloyd Price and John Mayall .

During the 1950s, Holloway worked primarily in the Chicago area, where he worked with Billie Holiday , Muddy Waters , Chuck Berry , Ben Webster , Jimmy Rushing , Arthur Prysock , Dakota Staton , Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson , Wardell Gray , Sonny Rollins , Red Rodney , Lester Young , Joe Williams , Redd Foxx , BB King , Bobby Bland and Aretha Franklin appeared. He also toured with Sonny Stitt , Memphis Slim and Lionel Hampton .

From 1963 to 1966 he was a member of the organist Brother Jack McDuff's band , in which George Benson also played at the time . In 1964 an album was released under his own name, Brother Red on Prestige Records , on which McDuff and Benson also played. Lonnie Smith , John Patton , Eric Gale and Leonard Gaskin also played with Holloway on other prestige albums of this time ; the recordings later appeared as Legends of Acid Jazz .

Holloway worked with Sonny Stitt from 1977 to 1982 , with whom he recorded two albums; after Stitt's death he played in Clark Terry's band ( Having Fun , 1990).

In the mid-1980s, Holloway began recording a series of albums for the Steeplechase , then for the Concord label, with guest musicians such as Horace Parlan , Cedar Walton , Phil Upchurch , Harry Sweets Edison and Jesper Lundgaard . In 1993/94 he played on two Horace Silver albums . He last lived in Cambria, California and died in February 2012 of complications from a stroke.
