Eric J. Gale (born September 20, 1938 in Brooklyn , † May 25, 1994 in Baja California , Mexico ) was an American guitarist specializing in rhythm and blues , fusion , easy listening and jazz .

Live and act

At the age of 12 he began to play the guitar as an autodidact . Although he had a degree in chemistry from Niagara University, he turned to music. He became an accompanist for Maxine Brown, The Drifters and Jesse Belvin , but from 1963 also recorded with King Curtis . He became known as a session musician in the 1960s and was involved in the recordings of Aretha Franklin , Bob James , Johnny Hodges , Jimmy Smith and Sonny Stitt . In the studios he worked on around 500 albums, especially for Creed Taylor's label CTI . The artists he has been involved in recording include Stanley Turrentine , Paul Simon , Lena Horne , Quincy Jones , Bob Marley , Nina Simone , Peter Tosh , Grover Washington, Jr. , Herbie Mann , Esther Phillips , Joe Cocker , Carly Simon , Van Morrison , Al Jarreau , Phil Upchurch and Billy Joel . For some time he was also the guitarist in Aretha Franklin's stage band. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he performed with Stuff , a New York jazz radio band.
