Eugene Wright

"The Senator" Eugene Joseph Wright (* 29. May 1923 in Chicago ) is an American jazz - double bass player . He became known as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet , especially through the most famous album by the group Time Out (1959), with the pianist Brubeck , the drummer Joe Morello and the saxophonist Paul Desmond .

Wright, who essentially taught himself to play the bass, played with the Lonnie Simmons group and led his own band, the "Dukes of Swing" from 1943 to 1946, which at times included Sun Ra and Yusef Lateef .

Wright then worked for Gene Ammons (1946-48, 1949-51), Count Basie (1948/49), Arnett Cobb (1951/52) and Red Norvo , with whom he toured internationally. His big breakthrough came when he became a member of the von Brubeck band in 1958. He played a very solid jazz that was influenced by Brubeck's playing style and stayed in his band until 1968. He then belonged to the Monty Alexander trio for several years . Then he worked a lot as a studio musician, but also taught. He later headed the jazz department at the University of Cincinnati .

He also played with Charlie Parker , Billie Holiday , Carmen McRae , Buddy DeFranco , Red Norvo , Cal Tjader , Kai Winding , Karen Hernandez, Sonny Stitt and Dorothy Donegan .

With Basically Wright he presented a book of his compositions for double bass that was published by Hansen.
