history

The old City Hall

Worfelden was first mentioned in a document as "Wormuelden" in 1211 in the Oculus Memorie , a list of goods belonging to the Eberbach monastery in the Rheingau. The former mayor Horst Gölzenleuchter found this out in 2007 through his own research. Before that, the year 1225 was the first mention of Worfelden, after which Heinrich von Worfelden is mentioned as a witness in a documented division of land between the Eberbachschen Hof Gehaborn and the village of Arheilgen. Based on this certificate, Worfelden celebrated its 750th anniversary in 1975.

Other spellings that have appeared for Worfelden over the years include: B. Urfelt, Würfelt, Worveldin and Wohrfelden. The possible meaning of the name can be found in the Hessian place-name book: "ur" for moist, moist field, "wara" for care, protection.

Worfeld nobility was also mentioned, for example a "Heinrich von Worfelden" , guarantor for Count Eberhard von Katzenelnbogen in 1297, or a "Clas Ernst von Worfelden, singer from Oppenheim, neighbors in Erfelden" .

Your Bede paid the Worfelder initially to the Lords of Dornberg , later the Counts of Katzenelnbogen (to 1479), then the Landgrave of Darmstadt. In 1791 the place had 2,002 acres , mostly sandfields, 157 acres of meadows, neither forest nor pasture. The forest was sold to Klein-Gerau around 1670 .

The seal Worfeldens consisted of a 1,622 orb in the shield. In 1647 the seal appears in its form, which is still valid today, with a modified cross. The privilege, which is unusual for a small village, to have the imperial orb in its coat of arms can now be explained. In 1420 the Lords of Wallbrunn received the small tithe von Worfelden. The Wallbrunners initially rose to the service of the Katzenelnbogen family, later they continued their ascent with the Hessians and represented, among other things, the Electors of the Palatinate as truches . In 1462, before the Battle of Seckenheim, Hans V. von Wallbrunn was defeated by Elector Friedrich I of the Palatinate as a knight of the empire, which gave him and the subsequent Wallbrunners the right to use the orb in their coat of arms.

During the Thirty Years' War , the Worfelder suffered several times from billeting and requisitions by foreign troops. A war damage register of the Upper County of Katzenelnbogen reports on the atrocities of Mansfeld during the invasion of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt in June 1622. The physical and mental atrocities caused by torture and forced contributions far exceeded the damage caused by requisitions.

The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Worfelden in 1829:

»Worfelden (L. Bez. Dornberg) Lutheran Filialdorf, located 1 14 St. from Dornberg and 1 St. from Großgerau, and consists of 74 houses with 456 inhabitants, who are Lutheran apart from 2 Cath. And 10 Jews. Although the place has its own church. "

In 1696 the parish's half-timbered church was completed. Today it is the center of the Evangelical Church Community in Worfelden and contains one of the oldest organs in Hesse. The Worfelder organ was made by the Bamberg organ builder Adam Knauth in 1623/24. The building has been a listed building since 1970. In 1912 Worfelden was connected to the power grid. At the church fair in 1929, water was drawn from the mains for the first time. The former agricultural character, like everywhere in the surrounding area, disappeared more and more after the Second World War . Many Worfelder found their livelihood at Opel in Rüsselsheim. Like the neighboring community of Klein-Gerau, Worfelden was an independent community until 1976. In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the communities of Büttelborn, Klein-Gerau and Worfelden were merged into one community on January 1, 1977 under the name of Büttelborn . Since then, independence from Büttelborn has been shown in its own local court and arbitration office .

Church and religion

The half-timbered church in Worfelder from 1696

The first evidence of the existence of a church dates back to 1557 when a chapel is mentioned. The church patronage was held from 1259 Count von Katzenelnbogen and previously Lord von Dornberg.

Today's Protestant half-timbered church was built on the site of a chapel built in the 13th century. In the Thirty Years War it was destroyed. In 1696 the first church was built. This building was about to be demolished several times due to construction defects, until a thorough renovation between 1970 and 1974 returned it to its original condition.

Up until the end of the Second World War , Worfelden was purely Protestant; it was not until 1946 that a large number of citizens of the Catholic faith came to Worfelden, when they took in refugees from the eastern German territories , and have since been looked after by the Catholic parish of St. John the Baptist in Weiterstadt .

The Catholic deanery Darmstadt of the diocese of Mainz and the Protestant deanery Groß-Gerau of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau are responsible as church administrations today .

Administration and courts

In administrative history, Worfelden belonged to the "Amt Rüsselheim" until 1820 , which since 1806 belonged to the " Province of Starkenburg " of the "Grand Duchy of Hesse" , which was founded under the pressure of Napoleon . After that it was administered by the " Dornberg District District ", which was created by the administrative reform in 1821. 1832 District districts and remaining unable stately offices in the province of Starkenburg were in circles divided, and Worfelden was the district of Gross-Gerau allocated. In 1842 the tax system in the Grand Duchy was reformed, and the tithe and land rent (income from property) were replaced by a tax system of the type that still largely exists today.

The affiliation to the Groß-Gerau district was only interrupted between 1848 and 1852, when the Starkenburg province was administered by administrative districts and Worfelden was part of the Darmstadt administrative district . The competent jurisdiction was the district court Großgerau from 1821 to 1879 and since 1879 it has been the district court Groß-Gerau .

coat of arms

Worfelden coat of arms
Blazon : "In red a gold placemark in the form of a ring with an antonius cross-like attachment."
Justification for the coat of arms: This stamp, accompanied by the letters W (OR) F (ELDEN), shows a landmark from the 18th century, while DAS GERICHTS SIGEL ZV WVRFELLE 1622 clearly shows the circle with a cross and the somewhat later seal with the inscription WORFELLEN 1647 shows an imperial orb that still appears in the seal of the Mayor of Worfelden from the early 19th century. Illustration by HW Diehl, who first set the town coat of arms, modified in the above manner, in colors, whereupon it was officially approved in this form in 1927.

The design of the coat of arms was in the hands of the heraldist Hermann Wilhelm Diehl.
