The barons of Dörnberg belong to the Hessian nobility. They have belonged to the Althessian knighthood that still exists today since its foundation. Since 1732 the family held the court office of the hereditary kitchen master (this corresponds to the Truchsess or Seneschal ) in the Landgraviate of Hesse .

It was named after the village of Dörnberg , municipality of Habichtswald , in the Kassel district . The headquarters have been in Herzberg Castle near Breitenbach am Herzberg in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district since 1477 . The family has also owned Schloss Hausen (near Oberaula ) since 1463 .
