Heinrich Friedrich August Karl Freiherr von Dörnberg (born February 8, 1831 in Siegen , † January 8, 1905 in Dresden ) was a German history painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Heinrich was the son of Oberforstmeister Karl von Dörnberg (1796–1873) and his wife Emma, ​​née von Rohr (1802–1877). His brothers Hermann and Ferdinand embarked on a military career in the Prussian Army and made it to lieutenant general . Another brother, Albert von Dörnberg , became a Prussian civil servant and member of the House of Representatives .

Dörnberg enrolled at the Düsseldorf Art Academy as a student in 1849 . Until 1855 he was taught by Wilhelm von Schadow (1st painting class), Karl Ferdinand Sohn (preparatory class, 2nd painting class) and Karl Josef Ignatz Mosler (art history). During his studies, Dörnberg made friends with the future history painter Otto Knille . After studying in Paris with Thomas Couture in Munich from 1854 to perfect himself under Karl von Piloty , Dörnberg temporarily lived with Knille in his garden apartment at Schwanthaler Strasse 49 in Ludwigsvorstadt . In May 1857 he met the poet Hermann Allmers there , and from then on he was one of his close artist friends.

Dörnberg lived for a while as a student of Julius Schrader in Berlin , where he took part in academic art exhibitions from 1860. On April 24, 1873 he married Antonie Walter (1849–1874) there, who died on March 24, 1874 in Dresden , a few days after the birth of their son Julius Anton Alexander (1874–1945). In 1877 Dörnberg stayed in Rome . On February 2, 1887, he married his second wife, Wanda Kubale (1833-1908) in Bochum . This marriage remained childless. The couple last lived in Leubnitzer Strasse 3 in the southern suburb of Dresden , in a villa in the Swiss quarter .

Dörnberg was a member of the Düsseldorf artists' association "Malkasten" .

Works (selection)

In the house of the poet Hermann Allmers in Rechtenfleth , Dörnberg and his friend Knille created mural paintings on the history of the marshes ( The Landing of the Romans in the Marches , The Introduction of Christianity by Bishop Wilhardus of Bremen , The Battle at Altenesch and Die Sturmflut ). In addition, Dörnberg illustrated historical march pictures in a picture frieze from Grisaille Allmers' cycle of poems between 1864 and 1874 . For the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Maria am Wasser in Dresden- Hosterwitz, Dörnberg painted the depiction of a risen Jesus, which is no longer preserved.
