Victor von Meyenburg

Victor von Meyenburg (born September 25, 1834 in Schaffhausen , † February 16, 1893 in Dresden ) was a Swiss artist and sculptor .

origin

Victor von Meyenburg's parents were Franz Anselm von Meyenburg (* December 4, 1788; † August 24, 1864) and his wife Maria Kleophea Stockar (1791-1859).

Life

At a young age, Victor von Meyenburg took lessons from the sculptor and painter Johann Jakob Oechslin and then did a two-year apprenticeship as a sculptor in his workshop. In 1856 he went to the academy in Munich where he studied under Max von Widnmann . In 1859 he went to Hugo Hagen's studio in Berlin. From 1859 to 1862 he made a study visit to Rome , then went to Zurich , before coming to Dresden in 1869, where he stayed until his death in 1893.

Victor von Meyenburg married on September 20, 1866 in Herrliberg Konstanze von May (born January 16, 1844 - † April 7, 1928), a daughter of the lawyer Friedrich von May (1808–1875) and a granddaughter of Hans Caspar Escher (1775– 1859). The couple had several children:

  • Walter (born March 31, 1880; † 1884)
  • Marta (born November 10, 1882 - † March 10, 1972) from 1920 head of the Social Women's School in Zurich
  • Hanns (born June 6, 1887 - † November 6, 1971), pathologist

Works

Victor von Meyenburg created numerous busts and also did decorative work at the Polytechnic and the Landesmuseum Zurich :

Much of his work has been destroyed over time or has disappeared in museum depots. Therefore, almost none of his works can be found in public spaces anymore.
