Maximilian Karl von Thurn und Taxis (born November 3, 1802 in Regensburg ; † November 10, 1871 ibid) was the sixth Prince of Thurn and Taxis from 1827 to 1871 and head of the private Thurn-und-Taxis-Post until 1867 .

Life

He was born as the fourth child of Prince Karl Alexander von Thurn und Taxis and his wife Therese Mathilde, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz , sister of Queen Luise of Prussia, on November 3, 1802 in the so-called Inner Palais (today the Princely Castle of St. Emmeram ) born.

At the age of nine he was made a subordinate in the Kgl. bay. fourth Chevaulegers regiment appointed king . After four years of education at the Swiss educational institute Hofwyl , he joined the Bavarian army on August 25, 1822 . After the death of his father in 1827, he asked for his discharge from the army. He then devoted himself to his new role as head of the Thurn and Taxis family, with advice and support from his mother Therese Mathilde.

On August 24, 1828, he married imperial free Wilhelmine von Dörnberg , known as Mimi, which was not befitting. The marriage produced five children. The princess died in the seventh year of marriage at the age of only 32. Maximilian Karl mourned very much and built the neo-Gothic mausoleum for his wife in the residential palace of St. Emmeram . On a bronze box, which contains a bust of the sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch in addition to her heart urn , there is a verse of the prince: Here my happiness rests, here her heart sleeps, here love laments eternal pain .

On January 24, 1839, he married Princess Mathilde Sophie of Oettingen-Oettingen and Oettingen-Spielberg in the Princely Residence Palace in Oettingen in Bavarian Swabia . They had eleven children, including Paul von Thurn und Taxis , who, because of his friendship with Ludwig II, was director of the Munich Court Theater in 1866.

His eldest son from his first marriage, Maximilian Anton , Hereditary Prince of Thurn und Taxis, married Duchess Helene in Bavaria, known as Nene, in Possenhofen in 1858, the sister of Empress Elisabeth of Austria . Maximilian Karl outlived his son by four years and died on November 10, 1871 in the residential palace of St. Emmeram in Regensburg. He was buried next to Mimi in the mausoleum.

In 1836 Maximilian Karl von Thurn und Taxis was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown .

Role as a postal operator

In 1827 he succeeded his father as head of the private Thurn-und-Taxis-Post , whose headquarters were in Frankfurt am Main . With the annexation of the Free City of Frankfurt by the Prussians in 1866 and the compulsory cession of the Thurn-und-Taxis-Post against compensation, the time of the private Thurn-und-Taxis-Post ended. The handover took place on July 1, 1867.
