Prince Wilhelm Franz Maria Christian von Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg (born November 26, 1835 in Neutrauchburg ; † July 20, 1906 Zeil Castle ) was a registrar of the kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg and from 1872 to 1899 President of the Württemberg Chamber of Notaries . He came from the Zeil line of the old Upper Swabian noble family of Truchsesse von Waldburg .

Wilhelm was the son of Prince Constantin von Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg (* 1807; † 1862) and Princess Maximiliane (* 1813; † 1874) and had five siblings. Wilhelm first visited the universities of Freiburg , Paris and Munich , before he came to study agriculture and forestry at the Hohenheim Academy after study trips . From 1859 to 1860 he was an attaché at the royal Bavarian embassy to the Kingdom of Hanover . From 1861 he appeared as his father's deputy in the Württemberg Chamber of Notaries. After his death, from 1862 until his own death in 1906, he was a hereditary member of this first chamber of the Württemberg states . Prince Wilhelm was also a member of the Chamber of Imperial Councils of the Crown of Bavaria. In the German War in 1866 and in the war against France from 1870 to 1871, he was active in the organization of the hospital system and the transport of the wounded. From 1871 to 1872 he was a member of the faction of the German Reich Party in the first Reichstag . He won his Reichstag mandate in the constituency of Württemberg 16 ( Biberach , Leutkirch , Waldsee , Wangen ). At the beginning of 1872 he resigned his mandate as a member of the Reichstag. From 1872 to 1899 he was President of the First Chamber of the Württemberg State Estates. Since 1899 he had his son, Hereditary Count Georg, represented him in the state parliament because of his poor health. After the line from Waldburg zu Zeil and Wurzach died out with the death of Prince Eberhard II in 1903, Wilhelm has since carried the title of Prince of Waldburg zu Zeil-Trauchburg and Wurzach.

Marriage and offspring

Prince Wilhelm was married twice. On February 24, 1862 he and Countess Maria Josepha von Wolfegg-Waldsee (* 1840; † 1885) married in Wolfegg. On May 23, 1889, Wilhelm and Princess Marie Georgine von Thurn und Taxis (* 1857, † 1909) were married in Bregenz. Prince Wilhelm belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.

Wilhelm's first marriage to Maria Josepha had five sons:

  • Georg (born May 27, 1866) died two days later as an infant
  • Georg, Prince of Walburg zu Zeil-Trauchburg and Wurzach (born May 29, 1867, † September 2, 1918 died near Allaines in the canton of Péronne ); ⚭ 1897 Marie Therese Altgräfin zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz (* 1869; † 1930)
  • Willibald Friedrich (* 1871; † 1947); entered into morganatic marriages twice and therefore renounced his princely title of nobility
  • Anton (* 1873; † 1948); 1902 Maria Immakulata Countess von Beroldingen (* 1880 in Stuttgart, † 1943 at Schloss Zeil)
  • Konstantin (* 1874 at Zeil Castle; † 1935)

Wilhelm's second marriage to Marie Georgine resulted in a son:

  • Wilhelm Karl (* 1890 at Zeil Castle; † 1927 Graubünden); ⚭ Marie-Therese Altgräfin zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz (* 1896 in Vienna, † 1985 in Rimpach )
