history

Mechensee

Neutrauchburg was called Mechensee until 1788. In the 11th century people spoke of Mechinsowe and in 1250 of Mechinsei . This property came to the Isny monastery in 1096 - a gift from the sister Irmengard of Count Manegold von Veringen , who founded the monastery in Isny. Already at this time there was probably a manor in the form of a castle at the place where the castle stands today. In the chronicles of the Isny monastery from 1631, a building is mentioned where people fled during the great city fire.

The later lords of Neutrauchburg, the Truchsessen von Waldburg , did not acquire property in the village until the 14th century. In 1306 the Waldburgers bought the castle. In the 15th century one got wildbane and bloodbane . The rule included the surrounding villages of Christazhofen, Friesenhofen, Großholzleute, Rohrdorf, Winterstetten and Wengen.

The nobility of Waldburg-Trauchburg

The Lords of Trauchburg were originally a branch line of the Barons of Rettenberg, who came into the relatives of the Counts of Veringen through marriages. In 1306 they sold Mechensee to the Truchsessen (Waldburg). The division of 1429 created three lines, including the Jacobean line, which died out in 1772. Friedrich von Waldburg-Trauchburg first signed up to the Teutonic Order, which resided in Altshausen Castle. With the Reformation he changed and went to East Prussia. The relatives, including the Augsburg bishop von Waldburg-Trauchburg and his nephew, the archbishop of Cologne, tried to transform Cologne into a secular duchy. But the attempt cost all of the family's money, so much debt was incurred that the family was permanently facing financial end for the next two centuries.

Neutrauchburg Castle

Count Franz Anton von Waldburg-Zeil came into the possession of the County of Trauchburg through inheritance in 1772. Since then, the family has been called " Waldburg-Zeil-Trauchburg ". Count Anton made Mechensee the new administrative center of the county. The completion of his extensive construction work was the official building in 1785/86, today's castle. This housed the upper office and the manorial archive. It was also Count Franz Anton who renamed Mechensee "Neutrauchburg".

It was not until the 19th century that Neutrauchburg Castle was used privately by the Princely House of Waldburg-Zeil-Trauchburg, partly as the residence of the hereditary family and partly as a widow's residence for the princesses. From 1848 to 1856 the castle served as a private boarding school for Prince Constantin von Waldburg-Zeil-Trauchburg.

Loreto Chapel in Neutrauchburg

The history of the spa in Neutrauchburg began with the Schlossgasthof “Sonne”. It was founded in connection with the foundation of the Loreto Chapel in 1686 by Countess Maria Monika von Waldburg-Trauchburg. Even the first tenant, a beer brewer from Ochsenhausen , was given the right to accommodate guests, bake bread, sell salt, distill brandy and trade in other things, and even set up a brewery at his own expense. So the numerous pious visitors to the chapel were able to strengthen and relax in the tavern right next door after their devotion. The new building and the newly established administration in Neutrauchburg allowed the place to flourish, but it suffered a decline from 1806. In that year Isny and Neutrauchburg were added to the Kingdom of Württemberg, so they came to their peripheral location on the border with Bavaria.

Since the renovation work in 2008, the castle has been used as a hotel and restaurant.

From the 20th century

On July 1, 1972, Neutrauchburg was incorporated into the city of Isny. In Neutrauchburg and the associated hamlets Menelzhofen, Ratzenhofen and Dorenwaid, around 1200 residents live in a quiet environment with a high quality of living. Kindergarten, elementary school, restaurants and shops make the place equally attractive for guests and citizens.

In the 1950s, Neutrauchburg began to develop into what is now a well-known health resort. Within 20 years, three clinics with a focus on internal medicine, orthopedics and psychosomatic medicine were built. Today they are Isny's biggest employer.
