Georg von Waldburg-Zeil (1867–1918)

Georg von Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg (born May 29, 1867 at Zeil Castle , † September 2, 1918 near Allaines in the canton of Péronne ) was a German nobleman. He came from the Zeil line of the old Upper Swabian noble family of Truchsesse von Waldburg .

Life

Georg was the son of Prince Wilhelm von Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg (1835-1906) and Princess Maria (1840-1885) and had five siblings. Georg first attended high school in Feldkirch before studying at the universities in Leipzig and Munich . In 1893 he became an officer candidate and made a career in the Württemberg army . Most recently he was Rittmeister à la suite in the army.

During the First World War , Georg was first leader of the Württemberg 1st Landwehr squadron , with which he was deployed in Upper Alsace . On August 30, 1915, he was in this position the character as a Major and was on 27 September 1915 his achievements with the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Merit awarded. He had already received both classes of the Iron Cross beforehand . Georg then became battalion commander in the Landwehr Infantry Regiment No. 126. There he received the patent for his rank on February 18, 1918 and took over a battalion in the fusilier regiment "Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, King of Hungary" (4th Württembergisches ) No. 122 on the Western Front . Prince Georg was killed in a battle north of Péronne shortly before the end of the war .

On May 8, 1897, Prince Georg and Marie Therese Altgräfin zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz married in Vienna (born October 31, 1869 in Florence , † August 27, 1930 in Oberau bei Wangen ). Prince Georg belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.
