Life

Maximilian Anton was a son of Prince Maximilian Karl von Thurn und Taxis and his wife Baroness Wilhelmine von Dörnberg .

He married the Duchess Helene in Bavaria , daughter of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria and Princess Ludovika Wilhelmine of Bavaria , in Possenhofen on August 24, 1858 . Helene was the eldest sister of Empress Elisabeth of Austria . As residence of the couple, the palatial Baroque four-winged building on the north east side of the should Bismarckplatz used to Gsandtenstraße at the entrance, the abbot of the monastery Prüfening 1701 as a flophouse and guest house for the monastery had built. The building was acquired in 1815 by Count Alexander von Westerholt, the Princely Thurn und Taxische library director, passed from his heirs to Baron Ludwig Carl August Reichlin von Meldegg in 1844, and in 1862 came back into the possession of the von Thurn und Taxis family. As the residence of the newly wed couple in Regensburg, the name Erbprinzenpalais became a common name for the palace .

Maximilian died of paralysis on June 26, 1867 at the age of 35 in Regensburg and was buried in the crypt chapel of Sankt Emmeram Castle. Due to his early death, his nine-year-old son Maximilian Maria became the heir's successor in 1871, skipping a generation. His widow Helene took over the guardianship of her son until 1883 and continued to live in the Erbprinzenpalais. After the death of her father-in-law Maximilian Karl, his widow and 2nd wife Mathilde Sophie also moved into the stately building.

King Ludwig II wrote in a personal letter of condolence to Prince Maximilian Karl:

"I feel with your lover the deep and righteous pain felt by them and the entire Taxis family, and I can see very well what an abundance of hopes has been extinguished with the dear life of the departed."
