Prince Friedrich

Friedrich Eugen Johann Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (born June 25, 1843 at Inzigkofen Castle , † December 2, 1904 in Munich ) was a member of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

He was the fourth son of Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Princess Josephine (1813–1900), daughter of Grand Duke Karl von Baden . At the end of September 1859 he moved to Bonn , where the prince completed his training. From 1861 to 1864 Friedrich made long trips to Austria, Italy, Switzerland and England. Further trips to Italy, Egypt and Greece followed in the 1860s and 1870s.

Prince Friedrich of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen

In the autumn of 1862 Friedrich Eugen began his military career in the Prussian Army and was assigned to the Westphalian Uhlan Regiment No. 5 stationed in Düsseldorf as a second lieutenant . With this regiment he took part in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 . With the transfer to the 1st Guards Dragoon Regiment and the promotion to Rittmeister , Friedrich's move to Berlin in the spring of 1870 was connected. Just a few months later, the association was relocated to the west and took part in the war against France in 1870/71 . In the further course of his military career, Friedrich was in command of the 22nd Division from June 17, 1889 to September 21, 1893 . From 1893 to 1896 he was commanding general of the III. Army Corps .

Prince Karl Anton thought about whether not only his eldest son Leopold , but also Friedrich would be eligible for the Spanish throne candidacy. Initially, Leopold showed little interest, as his wife, the Portuguese Antonia (1845–1913), also refused to do so out of patriotism. Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm I were rather skeptical. Karl Anton's hope in Friedrich turned out to be erroneous. Karl reported to the Kaiser Wilhelm I: "Prince Friedrich insisted with all determination that he would not accept the Spanish Crown".

family

On June 21, 1879, he married Princess Louise of Thurn and Taxis (1859-1948), daughter of Hereditary Prince Maximilian Anton (1831-1867) and Duchess Helene in Bavaria (1834-1890), a sister of Empress Elisabeth of Austria in Regensburg . The couple had no children. In the family, Friedrich was considered calm, almost phlegmatic, but also smart, warm and funny.

He was buried on December 6, 1904 in the Erlöserkirche in Sigmaringen .
