Dutch tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Holländer Tower is a tower of the old city fortifications on Waisenhausplatz in the old town of Bern .

The Dutch tower was built around 1256 as a defensive tower , it was part of the third defensive belt, to which the cage tower also belonged. When the fourth defensive belt with the Christoffelturm was created in 1345 , this diminished the military importance of the third defensive belt. In 1530 the buildings of the third defense belt were released for civil use. The Dutch tower housed a blacksmith and armory for many years. The Dutch tower got its name because Bernese officers in Dutch service came to this tower to indulge in tobacco consumption. They did this to be safe from uninvited bystanders, because tobacco smoking was still forbidden in Bern at that time.

At first the tower was still called the Raucherthurm , it was not until 1896 that the name Holländerurm was first mentioned. In 1885 the tower was renovated for the first time on the occasion of the Federal Rifle Festival. Six years later, in 1891, the exterior of the tower room was refreshed for the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the city of Bern. The last renovation to date was carried out in 1939.
