Geryonia proboscidalis is a jellyfish and the only species in the genus Geryonia fromthe Geryoniidae family .

features

Geryonia proboscidalis has an umbrella diameter of 35 to 80 millimeters and is almost hemispherical in shape. It has six radial channels. There are up to seven centripetal canals in each of the sections in between. The gonads positioned on the radial canals are heart-shaped. The long, conical stem serves as a digestive canal. The mouth is six-lipped. Perradial there are six hollow tentacles, which are ring-shaped with nettle cells (nematocysts). The nematocysts of the six other, interradially arranged fixed tentacles are in bundles. There are 12 statocysts as organs of balance .

distribution

The species is found in the warmer zones of all oceans. (Mediterranean, subtropical, tropical).

Scientific history

The species was first described by Peter Forsskål in 1775 as Medusa proboscidalis . In 1810 Peron and Lesueur described it again as Geryonia hexophylla . Johann Friedrich Eschscholtz transferred Medusa proboscidalis to this genus in 1829 as Geryonia proboscidalis .
