The Geryoniidae are a family of the hydrozoa from the order of the Trachymedusae .

features

Geryoniidae have four or six radial canals (sometimes more) and also have centripetal canals. A stalk serves as a digestive canal. The gonads located on the radial canals are leaf-shaped and flattened. At the edge there are numerous tentacles that appear in two forms, one hollow and the other fixed. Club-shaped sensory organs ( statocysts ), which are surrounded by mesogloea , also sit on the edge .

distribution

The species can be found in all oceans, but can only be found in warmer waters.

Systematics

Depending on the author, the family contains two to five (? Six) monotypic genera. Bouillon et al. (2006) only accept the following two genera:

The World Hydrozoa Directory lists four other genera, one of which is the noun dubium .:

The genus Geryonopsis, which was also previously placed here, with its only species Geryonopsis forbesii Van Beneden, 1886 became a younger synonym of Eirene Eschscholtz, 1829 (family Eirenidae Haeckel, 1879) through the synonymy of the type species with Eirene viridula (Péron & Lesueur, 1809 )
