Joe Wulf

Joe Wulf (born June 19, 1961 in Mayen ) is a German jazz trombonist , singer and band leader .

Career

Joe Wulf started playing the trombone at the age of nine. In 1977 he was co-founder of the "New Orleans Stompers Mayen", whose musical direction he took over in 1978. As a member of the big band of the municipal high school in Mayen, he won first prize in the state competition “Schools making music” in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1978. From 1979 Wulf played in the Landesjugend-Jazz-Orchester Rheinland-Pfalz before starting his trombone studies with Jiggs Whigham at the Cologne University of Music and Dance at the age of 21 . Joe Wulf played during this time a. a. with the jazz band "Jazz Preachers" in Cologne.

The American clarinetist and saxophonist Pierre Paquette brought him into his band in 1984. 1985 Joe Wulf became a member of the band of the English cornetist Rod Mason "Rod Mason's Hot Five". In 1987 Wulf took over the musical direction of “Rod Mason's Savannah Orchestra”. This was followed by appearances on radio and television, at jazz festivals in Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Switzerland, as well as record and CD productions.

At his concerts at home and abroad he gave concerts a. a. with the jazz musicians Chris Barber , Acker Bilk , Kenny Ball and Pete York (Great Britain), Bob Barnard and Tom Baker (Australia), Bill Ramsey and Paul Kuhn (Germany) and with the American musicians Bud Freeman , Art Hodes , Dan Barrett , Benny Waters , George Masso , Tom Saunders , Spiegle Willcox , Al Gray , Red Holloway , Slide Hampton , Roland Hanna , Jimmy Woode , Clark Terry and Buddy DeFranco . In the field of jazz he was involved in 19 recording sessions between 1986 and 2003.

Wulf taught from 1996 to 2006 in the jazz department at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne. Since 1990 he has been the leader of two international formations: the septet "Joe Wulf & the Gentlemen of Swing" and the big band "Joe Wulf & his Orchestra".

Awards

In 1997 Joe Wulf was awarded the German specialist media prize for “best trombonist and band leader” of the year. In 2011 Joe Wulf was awarded the “Artist of the Year” prize in the “Soloist” category by Künstler-Magazin.
