The Manhattan Transfer is an American vocal group founded in 1972 , consisting of Janis Siegel (* 1952 in Brooklyn) (alto), Alan Paul (* 1949) (tenor), Cheryl Bentyne (* 1954, with since 1979) and Trist Curless (bass) , who replaced the founder Tim Hauser (* 1941 in New York; † 2014).

The quartet wrote music history in 1981, when it both a Grammy for Jazz and one for Pop got (pop for Boy from NY City , Jazz for Until I Meet You ).

Name of the ensemble

The name The Manhattan Transfer goes back to the Manhattan Transfer station in New Jersey , which existed until 1937, where you had to change between long-distance trains and electric trains to go through a tunnel to Manhattan .

history

Tim Hauser drove a taxi due to a lack of commitment. While driving a taxi, he met one of the founding members Laurel Massé (in the founding year 1972) , who left the group in 1978 because of a car accident and was replaced by Cheryl Bentyne. Hauser, who has worked as a singer since 1959, had already founded a first formation called The Manhattan Transfer in 1969, which also released the album Jukin 'in 1971. Since the line-up is completely different with the exception of Hauser, this album is generally not assigned to The Manhattan Transfer.

A famous role model for their artistic a cappella singing style was the group Lambert , Hendricks and Ross around Jon Hendricks from the 1950s (for example the vocal imitation of instruments, the " Vocalese "). They get the suggestions for their songs from the most diverse areas of jazz and pop culture.

Shortly after their first album was released in 1975, they were invited to the CBS Show Live. The 1976 album Coming Out included a remake of the song Chanson d'Amour (first sung by Art and Dotty Todd in 1958 ), which was # 1 in the UK and Australia in 1977 and also the top ten in Germany, Norway, the Netherlands etc. reached.

The album Extensions with their future "signature tune" Birdland received a Grammy in 1981 in the category "Best Jazz Fusion Performance". A Grammy each in the Pop category for The Boy from New York City and a Grammy in the “Best Jazz Performance, Duo or Group” category for Until I Met You (Corner Pocket) . In 1982 there was another Grammy in the category "Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group" for the cover version of the song Route 66 , which was also used in the Burt Reynolds film Sharky and his professionals , but only in 1985 on the LP Bop Doo Wopp appeared. In 1983, The Manhattan Transfer was named for the song Why Not! again awarded a Grammy in the jazz category. The most critically rated album Vocalese from 1985 was nominated for 12 Grammys, of which they received two, one in the category "Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group" and one in the category "Best Arrangement for Voices". Brasil received a Grammy in the Pop category (second overall), and Sassy received another Jazz Grammy in 1992 (sixth overall). Trist Curless replaced Tim Hauser, who died in the same year, in 2014.
