Tim Hauser (born December 12, 1941 in Troy , New York , † October 16, 2014 in Sayre , Pennsylvania ) was an American singer and member of the vocal group The Manhattan Transfer .

Life

At the age of seven, Hauser and his family moved to New Jersey , where he lived in Ocean Township and Asbury Park. He attended St. Rose High School in Belmar. Since 1989, an award has been given in his name to students who have made special achievements in theater studies. At the age of 15 he started performing as a singer. He formed a Doo Wop vocal quintet, The Criterions . They recorded two singles for the Cecilia label. The Criterions also appeared on Alan Freed's Big Beat Show . Hauser also developed a talent as a producer at an early age.

In 1959 he began studying economics at Villanova University . In his student years he continued his musical interests. Together with other members of The Criterions, Tommy West and Jim Ruf, he appeared in the group Troubadors Three as a folk singer. He was also a member of the Villanova Singers and the Villanova Speyer / Coventry Lads , along with his classmate Jim Croce . Hauser worked for the university radio station WWVU for over four years. In 1963 he graduated from Villanova with a bachelor's degree in economics.

In 1964, Hauser served in the US Air Force and the New Jersey Air National Guard . In 1965 he began a career in marketing . From 1965 to 1966, Tim Hauser worked as a market research analyst at the advertising agency Sullivan, Stauffer, Colwell and Bayles and from 1966 to 1968 as head of market research for the Special Products Division of the National Biscuit Company , where he was responsible for cereal snacks, cereal products and pet food.

In 1969 he founded The Manhattan Transfer with Gene Pistilli, Marty Nelson, Erin Dickins and Pat Rosalia. The group had a country and R&B sound to it. Together they recorded the album Jukin ' on the Capitol label. Due to the different views on the musical direction, the group broke up in the early 1970s. Through odd jobs he met the singers Laurel Massé and Janis Siegel . Together they decided to re-found The Manhattan Transfer in 1972. Alan Paul was hired as another singer . After a car accident, Massé decided to leave the group and pursue a solo career. In 1978 Cheryl Bentyne was hired to replace her.

The Manhattan Transfer have won 10 Grammys and many gold and platinum records. They were voted the best vocal group of the 1980s by both Down Beat and Playboy readers . In 2007 it won the JazzTimes reader poll for best vocal group. When Ahmet Ertegün founded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , he elected Tim Hauser to the selection committee; a position he held for three years between 1986 and 1989. In 1993, Hauser received an honorary doctorate in music from the Berklee College of Music . Hauser died of cardiac arrest from pneumonia on October 16, 2014 in a Sayre hospital at the age of 72.
