Joseph Banowetz (born December 5, 1936 ) is an American pianist and music teacher.

Life

Banowetz graduated from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with a first prize. His teachers were Carl Friedberg , a student of Clara Schumann and György Sándor , a student of Béla Bartók . He made a name for himself as one of the most important concert pianists and recitalists of the present and has performed on five continents with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic , the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra , the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra , the Barcelona Concert Society Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra , the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra , the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1992 he received the Liszt Medal of the Hungarian Liszt Society.

Banowetz's discography includes more than 45 albums, including numerous world first recordings, including the first complete recording of all works for piano solo and piano and orchestra by Anton Rubinstein . For the first recording of Mili Balakirew's Scherzos and Mazurkas, he received the German Music Critics' Prize in 1987. His recordings of Balakirev's 30 Russian Folk Songs and Paul Kletzki's Piano Concerto were both nominated for a Grammy .
