Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra

history

The orchestra was founded by the Soviet government in August 1943. The first chief conductor was Lew Steinberg, who worked at the Bolshoi Theater and led the orchestra until his death in 1945. His successors were Nikolai Anossow, Leo Ginsburg, Mikael Terian and Weronika Dudarowa. During this time the orchestra cultivated the Russian and Soviet repertoire in particular and performed works a.o. a. by Nikolai Mjaskowski , Sergei Prokofjew , Dmitri Shostakowitsch and Reinhold Glière for the world premiere. Especially Weronika Dudarowa coined as one of the first and longest-reigning chief conductor inside the Soviet Union from 1960 to 1989 the profile of the orchestra. She expanded the orchestra's works and also went on tours abroad.

In 1989 Pawel Kogan became chief conductor, who reoriented the orchestra and increasingly also performed works from the European and American repertoire, including the great symphonic cycles from Beethoven to Mahler . Worldwide concert tours led to the USA, Japan, China, South Korea, Australia and Europe. In 1997, Kogan received the State Prize of the Russian Federation for the orchestra's concert series with all of the Mahler symphonies . In April 2018, the orchestra under Kogan celebrated its 75th anniversary at the Moscow Conservatory with works by Brahms , Prokofiev and Alexander Scriabin ( Le Poème de l'Extase ) , followed by a tour of 20 cities in the country in 2018/19.
