Stefan Sanderling (born August 2, 1964 in East Berlin ) is a German conductor .

Live and act

Stefan Sanderling is the son of the conductor Kurt Sanderling (1912–2011) and the double bass player Barbara Sanderling. His half-brother Thomas Sanderling (* 1942) is also a conductor and his brother Michael Sanderling (* 1967) is a conductor and cellist .

In his youth, Sanderling played the piano and clarinet . After completing his military service with the NVA staff music corps , he studied music at the University of Halle . Even his parents, who were part of the GDR nomenklatura , did not protect him from having to break off his studies in Halle because of his rebellious nature.

After one of his covert comments against the regime in the program booklet on a Shostakovich concert, he was advised to look for another job. The protective hands of his professor Christian Kluttig , who continued to teach him more or less privately and also recommended him to Kurt Masur , music director at the Gewandhaus and professor without a chair at the Leipzig Conservatory of Music , saved him from social decline. Sanderling regularly assisted Masur in his orchestra rehearsals and was encouraged by Masur to look for his further path abroad, where he did not have to fear social reprisals.

Thanks to his father's influence with the GDR authorities, Sanderlings was able to continue his career at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute , where he continued his studies with conductors Leonard Slatkin , Juri Temirkanow , Edo de Waart and John Nelson . He then completed his studies at the University of Southern California with Daniel Lewis .

Sanderling's first position as chief conductor from 1989 to 1995 was at the Brandenburg Philharmonic in Potsdam, which was dissolved on July 31, 2000 . From 1996 to 2001 he was general music director at the State Theater Mainz and the Philharmonic State Orchestra Mainz . At the same time he was chief conductor of the Orchester de Bretagne until 2004 . In 2002 he moved to the Florida Orchestra , where he prematurely terminated his contract in 2014 after disagreements with management.

Parallel to his work in Florida, Sanderling was principal guest conductor in 2003 and chief conductor of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra from 2004 . He was music director of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2011. Since 2016 he has held the position of music director at the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra . As a guest conductor, Sanderling has been with the Staatskapelle Berlin , the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Bamberg Symphony , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the London Symphony Orchestra , the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg , the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra , the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna , the NHK Symphony Orchestra ( Tokyo) and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra . His phonograms have been released by Sony Music Entertainment and Naxos .

Trivia

Discordant notes

As a clarinetist during his military service in the staff music corps of the NVA in the mid-1980s, Sanderling caused a scandal during an unofficial visit by Yasser Arafat . Arafat, on the onward journey to Czechoslovakia , was supposed to say goodbye musically and Sanderling suggested playing Friedrich Smetana's Moldau on his farewell , knowing full well that the melody is very similar to the Israeli national anthem. The result was a disgruntled Arafat and a week in prison for Sanderling.

Suspicion of terrorism

An embarrassing incident occurred when Sanderling and his wife Isabelle Besançon were invited to a Tampa Bay Buccaneers football game by businessman David Harbert from Tampa on December 31, 2002 and an employee of the entrance control was entering because his wife's bag was too large of Raymond James Stadium . This incident resulted in a large local rustling of leaves. The inspector explained his behavior, also in consequence of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York on the grounds that Sanderling and his wife would have been foreigners and that there would have been room for a bomb in such a bag. The director and spokeswoman for the Tampa Sports Authority , Barbara Casey, apologized promptly in writing to Sanderling.
