history
The area's indigenous people were First Nations who lived primarily on the Saskatchewan River by fishing. When the men went out to hunt in their canoes , women and children stayed behind on the bank and the place was called Nipowewin in their language, meaning 'waiting place'. In 1748, settlers from Montreal settled there and operated a small trading post . The main source of livelihood was initially the trade in fur . Due to the abundance of forests in the area, sawmills were also built. With the connection to a railway line and the construction of a bridge in 1928 over the Saskatchewan River, the infrastructure of the place was further improved. With the construction of the EB Campbell Dam in 1963 and the Francois Finlay Dam in 1986, two hydropower plants were put into operation. This also created two reservoirs, Tobin Lake in the northeast and Codette Lake in the southwest of Nipawin. The city is therefore also known as the Town on Two Lakes . The power plants are operated by the energy supply company SaskPower . Today the city is a popular destination for tourists and anglers because of the abundance of fish in the river and lakes. Ice fishing is very popular in winter . The focus is on the following types of fish: Eyeglasses , Canadian pikeperch , American perch , sea sturgeon and pike . The Nipawin Hawks ice hockey team is based in Nipawin .
