Life

Student studied at the Berlin University of Music . In 1920 he began his career as Kapellmeister at the Gleiwitz City Theater in Upper Silesia. In 1922 he moved to the Königsberg City Theater and in 1924 to Hanover for the first time .

In 1928 Johannes Schüler became music director in Oldenburg . As in Hanover, he stayed there for four years. Already during this time he stood out for his commitment to contemporary music . During his engagement in Oldenburg in 1928, he was one of the first conductors to perform Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck and thus to a certain extent helped achieve a breakthrough. On April 14, 1930 he conducted the world premiere of the Three Orchestral Pieces op. 6 again by Alban Berg with the Oldenburg State Orchestra . Through the initiatives of Schülers and his predecessor Werner Ladwig , Oldenburg was a center of modern German music care during these years.

In 1932 he moved to the Halle Opera House as musical director . After the National Socialists seized power , he was City Music Director in Essen from 1933 to 1936 before he was appointed to the Berlin State Opera in 1935 . In 1937, Schüler became a member of the NSDAP (No. 5.377.245). In 1938 he was appointed "Staatskapellmeister" by Adolf Hitler , and in the following year he was appointed general manager. On October 3, 1943, Schüler made a guest appearance with the Berlin Philharmonic in occupied Krakow . Before the German theaters were closed due to the war, Schüler conducted the last performance in the State Opera Unter den Linden on August 31, 1944 with Mozart's opera Die Hochzeit des Figaro .

Schüler was highly valued as a conductor by Hitler, so that in August 1944, before the intended closure of the theaters, he included him in the God-gifted list of the most important conductors, which released him from war obligations.

In the post-war period, the first Berlin performance of the opera Mathis der Maler by Paul Hindemith took place under Schüler's direction .

In 1949 Johannes Schüler went to Hanover for the second time. There he was general music director (GMD) and opera director of the opera house until 1960 . One of his great successes was the world premiere of the opera Boulevard Solitude by the then young composer Hans Werner Henze on February 17, 1952. In addition, Schüler remained connected as a permanent guest conductor of the Berlin Linden Opera.
