Hans-Peter Lehmann (born December 15, 1934 in Kassel ) is a German director and general manager .

Lehmann was born the son of the sculptor Kurt Lehmann and an art historian. In 1955 he passed the Abitur at the Waldorf School in Hanover , then studied music at the Detmold University of Music from 1955 to 1957 and then studied art history and theater studies at the Free University of Berlin from 1957 to 1958 .

After completing his studies, Lehmann first became assistant to Carl Ebert and Gustav Rudolf Sellner at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and between 1960 and 1973 assisted Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner at the Bayreuth Richard Wagner Festival . Between 1963 and 1976 he worked as senior game manager in Ulm , Mainz , Freiburg im Breisgau and Nuremberg . In 1970 he directed the Tannhauser by Richard Wagner at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich , 1974 in Nuremberg The soldiers of Bernd Alois Zimmermann .

From 1976 to 1980 Lehmann worked as opera director at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and from 1980 to 2001 he was the director of opera at the Hanover State Opera . In addition to his permanent engagements, Lehmann has also staged at the opera houses in Essen , Frankfurt am Main , Stuttgart , Basel , Breslau , Brussels , Amsterdam , Milan , Paris , Chicago , Venice and Zurich .

Lehmann held a professorship at the Hanover University of Music and Theater . He is involved in the board of trustees of the Hannover Community Foundation .

Lehmann is married to the singer Erika Maria Lehmann. The marriage resulted in two sons.
