The Freundeskreis Hannover e. V. is a non-profit association for active citizen participation , which has set itself the goal of promoting art and culture in the city and region of Hanover .

history

The association was founded in 1988 as a forum for active citizen participation in preparation for the 750th anniversary of the city's foundation.

The Freundeskreis Hannover is with approx. 1,500 members of the largest civic association in the country. As an independent and non-profit citizens 'association, it is committed to a lively urban society with the aim of strengthening the citizens' identification with their city, supporting cultural initiatives, developing new ideas for the benefit of the city and its residents and promoting dialogue between citizens, business, Promote politics, science, cultures and religions.

To the activities of the Freundeskreis Hannover e. V. count z. B. Lectures and discussions on topics relevant to the city, support and advice for the cultural scene, visits to companies, institutions, authorities and facilities typical of Hanover, strengthening the regional concept by visiting the regional communities and, last but not least, communication and networking among the members.

Since 1995 the Freundeskreis Hannover e. V. the city culture prize endowed with € 5,000 annually.

For the Expo 2000 the Friends of Hanover organized the initiative We invite the world's youth to Germany . This should "enable young people from all over the world [...] to visit Germany and the world exhibition". The association arranged several thousand (often free) overnight accommodations for young people at the Expo and published the bilingual city guide Hanover - more than Expo / more than Expo , which was primarily aimed at young people with texts in scene jargon.

In 2001 the Freundeskreis initiated the International A cappella week in Hanover, which has been held annually since then .

At the turn of the year 2011/2012, the former Hanover Tourism Service merged with the Friends of Hanover, which almost doubled its membership to 1,100.

In 2013, Managing Director Erwin Schütterle retired after years of service and handed over the management to Gil Maria Koebberling.

For the 775th anniversary of the city in 2016, the Freundeskreis Hannover e. V. organized the large citizens' festival with 20,000 visitors together with the state capital Hanover and designed the largest chalk image of Hanover on the Kröpcke for the municipal elections.

In the spring of 2017, long-time CEO Roger Cericius resigned from his position. His successor was his previous deputy Matthias Görn. Change also in the office: the new managing director is Katharina Sterzer.

City Culture Prize

The Freundeskreis Hannover is the initiator and holder of the City Culture Prize, which is awarded annually. The prize, at the time endowed with 10,000 DM , later with 5,000 euros, was awarded for the first time in 1995, and since 2012 a special prize has been awarded for outstanding civic engagement.
