Eckhart Liss was born in Hanover in 1958 as the son of pastor Günter Liss (†), who was then active in Springe , and his wife Annemarie . In the Springer rectory, where the organ, piano and accordion were played, Liss came into close contact with art and music early on and first learned to play the flute . In 1973 Eckhart's father Günter , together with his sister Ellen Berg , who was married in Frankfurt, inherited the Hermannshof in Völksen , originally laid out by the furniture manufacturer Hermann Rexhausen . After the pastor's death, the widow and her son moved to the estate he had inherited near the Deister in 1980 . The young musician then learned how to make transverse flutes for five years at the Conrad Mollenhauer company in Fulda , but from 1981 looked for a teacher to design his own small sculptures , whom he found in the person of Jan Holschuh in the Odenwald . There, Liss completed a “ basic Bauhaus apprenticeship”, while working primarily with hardwood and ivory . At the International Ivory Competition , advertised by the German Ivory Museum in Erbach in 1985 , Liss won first prize for one of his works.

In order to finally be able to create larger sculptures, Eckhart Liss then went to Berlin as a guest student at the University of the Arts , where he learned "knocking in stone and sawing in wood" under Makoto Fujiwara , including a chainsaw certificate, and in particular "an eye for the outdoor space, for sculpture and landscape , for landscape architecture ”.

Equipped in this way, Liss rediscovered the now neglected manor in Völksen, inherited from his relatives , "as the basis for a sculptor's workshop", which was able to start work the following year as the "Hermannshof artist's workshop". Meanwhile, Liss continued his studies in Berlin, taught flute at the music school in Spandau and played in various formations , " jazzy and improvised , most intensely as" Kliss "with bassist Gerhard Klink, a friend from Fulda times". In addition, Liss taught the musical "playing without notes" in workshops at schools and music colleges .

After Liss had initiated the Hermannshof Artists' Day, which takes place annually in August in 1990, as artistic director at the Hermannshof , in 1992 he became the managing director of the non-profit association Art and Encounter Hermannshof e. V. There he founded fixed formats such as literature by the fireplace , short film days, video art exhibitions, the literature workshop , spring exhibitions in Hermannshof Park and open-air cinema days. Liss developed a new house in the park, inaugurated in 2003, into the multifunctional main venue for the events he organized, and the historic tea pavilion from 1917 into an exhibition space for art. In addition to the historic main building, Liss shaped the entire park with its meadows and plantation into an open-air art exhibition space for a wide variety of artists. To this end, Liss worked with the Hanover Garden Region , employed “15 trainees for gardening and landscaping at the Überlingen Academy ” and cooperated with the Hameln / Springe employment office.
